I remembered I never actually finished Half-Life 2 because I lost my savegames while being in the Citadel, almost at the end. So I decided to replay it all again, kinda crazy to play it in 1920x1280 with all details on.

A developer could have thought - the people stuck with GBs cannot enjoy the color version. Give them something in return. An extra room with loot for example.
