In other words, yes, the multitap is emulated. As long as your PC and ZSNES have enough input devices configured (keyboard, joystick, joystick etc.), you can run games using the emulated multitap. Is there some other way for me to play Super Bomberman with four players on a machine that only has USB...

Maybe because the screen's refresh rate was reduced to 50 Hz by that power-saving mode? The thing about vsync and triple-buffering is that, to fix the tearing, these options will limit your frame rate to the refresh rate of your monitor. If that's only 50 Hz, then your frame rate is limited to 50/60...
