Just found a bug in DirectSound code myself. Try to play graphically intensive game (like the Sonic 3D selection screen) and use a very heavy filter plugin (like hq2xS by mudlord,nitsuja) and hear the sound. About the sound problem I was having, I checked my sound card drivers and they were up to date, but I have found a work around for the issue.
