Why do games crash/freeze on my computer?
Games ive tried, Battlefield 1942 and road to rome, crashed like...5 out of 6 times, Oblivion has crashed everytime...which is like 8 times, Thief crashed 1 time...but I was so mad I didnt continue, and so on....
Ok...I play oblivion for roughly half an hour, then it crashes to the desktop without shutting off, so I hit the game thing in the taskbar, it pops back up, regardless of what I do next, it freezes. I cant save, I cant do anything, it just freezes. I open task manager and it doesnt say its stopped running. (Other games just freeze without going to the desktop)
Before anyone asks, I have updated my drivers for my card...in fact the drivers that came with my card were the newest ones. I have defragged, scan disked, restarted, everything...and it still freezes. I have nothing running except a fire wall, so its not taking all the resources. (And the firewall is not blocking it, or any other game)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200
M2n-e Asus motherboard
2 gigs corsair dual channel
Corsair 520 watt psu
Nvidia 7900 256mb pci-e
Everything that I can see, is running cool. The processor is running 27-34c when it runs oblivion on the highest mode.
I ran the DXdiag and everything passed. I checked all the drivers in manage folder and everythings fine...
Additional Details
---In oblivion...this is how fast it freezes. I loaded right outside of the first visible dungeon when you start. It has froze 3 times since I entered...each time I get a little farther, then save...and it freezes so I have to load way back cause I dont have time to save every 2 seconds.---

You should really check to see if there are other background apps running and disable them, including the firewall if need be.
Also, it is an idea to use different video card drivers, since NVidia usually has a ton of leaked versions out there.

I patched all but oblivion. Im going to download a patch soon...but patching the other games didnt help any...so I dont know.
And does anyone know where to get a newer driver for my 7900 gs geforce? I found a beta driver released in november...but I dont know how trustworthy it is considering its beta...

That is completely not what I meant.IloveSteph wrote:You mean theres other drivers for the card thats not nvidia? Where do I find these drivers? Also, I have almost everything shut off, with or without the firewall it freezes
Try a different driver revision (beta or official) and see if that helps.
http://www.guru3d.com for tons of NVidia drivers you can download (of course, don't consider older versions of drivers that were not meant to support your hardware).

nVidia also hosts the older driver revisions on their FTP site.Deathlike2 wrote:That is completely not what I meant.IloveSteph wrote:You mean theres other drivers for the card thats not nvidia? Found that trying to dig out drivers for an older card. The current drivers at the time wouldn't take anything older than a GeForce3, I think.
Kinda sad that the later detonators don't support the TNT family(at least they renamed them nForce after a while, but they still point you to the nForces if you tell them you have a TNT2. They no longer list TNT1 drivers anywhere on their site).

Let me know when hardware that can't run today's games is worth updating.Gil_Hamilton wrote:nVidia also hosts the older driver revisions on their FTP site.Deathlike2 wrote:That is completely not what I meant.IloveSteph wrote:You mean theres other drivers for the card thats not nvidia? No, they load perfectly...but when I start the game...a couple times it froze while loading....but most of the time it freezes a couple minutes to an hour into the game.phOnYmIkE wrote:when the games first start, do they say "checksum = ok"?
AMD drivers? I didnt know about them. I will download them in just a second. I didnt realize that i needed one, I thought the drivers for the motherboard would have them.

XP allows for "processor drivers". This is mostly for optimization purposes (and potentially for bug fixing, though unlikely). I don't see how dense you can be when it comes to comprehending what you have been told. Just install the processor drivers funkyass linked to, since there are required for stability/performance (particularly what you are experiencing).

Deathlike, you really ain't helping matters.
If you are running a Athlon 64 CPU, you should install the drivers for xp from AMD, as XP lack proper support for the power saving states that Kool n Quiet actually uses.
