You know, I believe you are totally forgetting one thing: Japanese covers are made for the Japanese market. And the Japanese have different taste when it comes to many things, probably game covers, too. Hell, even I like the japanese style of the Suikoden cover more. What you have described is not a general rule, more a matter of your personal preferences.

Europe got the same cover as japan for the PS FFs. I think it looks nicer than the north american version.

Localization, whether it be translation or art or whatever is for marketing/selling purposes. If you cannot grasp that concept, you are retarded.
