For stuff like this, perhaps. However, I don't think people's generousity will show.. it would be more of the same (people being too cheap to want to pay).
But how are they going to distribute the money? Who is going to distribute it? The ramifications of it are just horrible. But it's a nice dream.

If donations where to work Dejap, J2E, RPGe and other translation groups would still exist today and Nightwolve Translations would not be in need of funds. the ZSNES staff would not have to work and only code.
