windows install from usb key

Post by jdratlif »

I have a machine at work that I was toying around with, but it had Windows on it, so naturally I installed Linux.

There was very little problem getting syslinux to work with a gentoo install CD.

However, my boss was less than enthusiastic about the change. The machine is old (how old I'm not sure), and the CD won't boot from the XP disc I have. I'm not sure if it's the CD or the drive.

Anyone know a way to install Windows XP Professional from a USB key? I have a 1 GB key, and the machine booted the gentoo livecd from the install disc fine.

I don't want to install TO the key, I want to use it like an install disc to put it on the hard drive.

Have you tried booting the XP disk in another PC? Maybe it's one of those non-bootable XP disks.

I don't have any other machine to test it with right now.

It is a possibility the disc is not bootable. I will test this later today.

edit: the disc boots in other machines.

This worked great, once I figured out how to restore the mbr.
