code problems with Secret of mana

Post by jasondickstein71 »

I don't know what it is abot Secret of Mana but everytime I use game genie codes or PAR codes with that rom, it causes the rom to stop working. Either it's a graphics issue or zsnes shuts off and I have to reopen it. Is there a particular code that causes this that I should remove or does this rom not work well with codes? If anyone knows I would appreciate it.

The issue with secret of Mana isn't what the codes do if they work or not. The issue is that the codes affect the rom such as graphics like the rom freezes up and there is no picture just sound. It has an adverse affect on the rom. It is the only rom that has that problem. I have the info for the rom:

Name: Secret of MANA
Speed: 21/SlowROM
ROM Map: HiROM
Type: 02
Kart contents: ROM+RAM+BAT
Header ROM Size: 16Mbits
Calculated ROM Size: 16 Mbits
SRAM size: 8KB (64Kbit)
Actual Checksum: 51FC
Header Checksum: 51FC
Header Checksum Compliment: AE03
Output: NTSC 60Hz
CRC32: D0176B24
Licensee: Square
ROM Version: 1.0
Region: USA/Canada

Thanks.

Dude... you didn't even bother to provide codes so someone can reproduce your problem.

Codes can crash/freeze up a game, like it would on the original console. Very often it is not ZSNES's problem, but the code that is the actual problem.

That's still not helpful. You need to isolate the faulty code that doesn't work. You would have to test a particular code one by one.

Then again, you haven't paid attention to my original premise...
Codes can crash/freeze up a game, like it would on the original console. Very often it is not ZSNES's problem, but the code that is the actual problem.

Why even bother playing the game if you're gonna use that many codes?

Invincibility, 1-hit kills, instant max charge attacks, stats hacked to the max, cash hacked to the max, free everything(isn't the cash hack redundant at that point?), instant level-ups...
And to top it off you have duplicate codes and a mix of Game Genie and PAR codes that conflict with each other?

Dumping that many hacks onto ANY game is a Bad Idea.
Using conflicting codes is a Very Bad Idea.
And doing both of the above to a game that's ALREADY as glitch-riddled as Secret of Mana is a Really Fucking Stupid Idea.

I took your advice and I kept removing codes that related to invincibility, level increase etc. Each time I did this I would start the game with the remaining codes but the same thing happened: when the hero tries to pull the sword out at the beginning of the game the screen goes blank. More codes are removed and the same result. The only codes I have left are codes that relate to just money items that are free, but the same thing happens again: the screen goes blank just as the sword is being pulled out. I am getting the impression that this rom can't work with any codes.

just keep removing them, its bound to just be one unlikely code, when you find it you can start adding the other codes one by one again.

The fact that you are enabling 10+ lines of codes is enough for one stupid code to be suspect.

Start small instead and stop using multiple codes that you never ever need enabled at the same time.

Disable all cheats UNTIL you are at the point where you need them.

For the cheats that constantly write a value to WRAM (Stands for Work Random Access Memory), to any programmer it's blatantly obvious why it can and does cause crashes. Square's RPG's seem to use a lot more stack-based memory structures than other games... in other words they are not dedicating an exact RAM address location to any one particular thing.

Wow that's a lot of codes. Try the easy way; remove all codes and THEN enter one. If it works, enter another. repeat until something breaks.

Then try that code on its own. If it crashes again, then that code is bad. If it works, then its a combination of codes.
If you can read this then the boat must have sunk.

Let me make this clear..

It is NOT the ROM's fault that it doesn't work.

It is NOT ZSNES's fault that it doesn't work.

It is your fault for enabling 10+ codes and expecting them to ALL WORK.

Fair warning: If I have to repeat that, I will get nasty about it because you are simply not understanding the issue at hand.
the statement I pointed you to earlier, but probably didn't read wrote:Important: Please do not report cheat issues in the Bugs forum. They are not ZSNES bugs. Some codes do change the behavior of the game on the real console and some effects from the cheat can prevent you from progressing through a game and/or cause undesirable behavior.
The best example, a screwed up SOM game because of cheats in use: http://board.zsnes.com/phpBB2/viewtopic ... =tropic%2A
