Game typos.

Post by Rydian »

So, I finally noticed this in chrono trigger.

Image

"Ayla No1!!"

I looked up a script listing on gamefaqs that confirmed it, though it added one more question mark, oh well.

So. Wait. Did the translator actually type this on a real keyboard? And here I thought SNES games were made of pixie dust and hooker corpses with some chest hair thrown in to fuel the addon chips.

EDIT: OH. I get it. It's supposed to be "No. 1", as in "number 1". ... *kicks woosley*

Took me, what, a year to update this info?
And meh, screw legs.
Oh... puns. I get it. Shame on me.

WOW you're slow.
It's REALLY Woolsey's fault that you're not sharp enough to figure things out without the extra period?

Hell, if the period was there, you'd probably be laughing at how he managed to get an unshifted ! in.

Seriously, it's damn clear what's going on.

gil: It was clear after I made the post. Come on, you've never been misunderstood due to a typo before?

What about the "Off course!" option in FFVII's arena? (In the PSX version)

IST: never played.

Bahamut: Never played the PSX version, but I think I saw a typo or two in the SNES version.

Link: Well, didn't they only have one guy doing the translating?

Clements: How could I forget that?
EDIT: Also, I know, stop beating me. T_T

Then I recall the part in FFVII when Yuffie and Elena are hung upside down (Wutai) by that weirdo Don, he then said to them "One press of this button, and they'll become a squashed tomatoes!!"

Hey, if you hadn't blamed Woolsey, who did a quite fine job given the constraints and takes entirely too much shit for doing reasonably decent translations on short time frames with often-excessive content restriction rules and gets blamed for games he wasn't even involved with...

Anything done by SCEA is pretty bad, though. FF7 is just the tip of the iceberg.

Legend of Dragoon's "Die more and more!" was a favorite of mine.

I for one am not blaming Woolsey, either. Considering the limitations of the SNES (low RAM, etc). he did a very good job. There are a few things that bugged me in FFVI, such as the names being in all capital letters, but other than that, I'd say it was well done for the day. This is 1994 we're talking about. BTW, what does Clements mean by "OP was a collosal failure"? Was it another crappily translated game?

X-Files started airing in 1993, I have high expectations. Nah, I don't want to get after the guy too much, but aside from censorship (which was necessary) it is too bad that he couldn't have kept things closer to the original script. I'm sure time constraints were an issue, and looking at other games from the time it's not like it was sub par, (as sad as that is). At least he didn't take himself to seriously, or produce stuff like FFVII, if any game actually needs a retranslation it'd be pretty near the top of the list.

Rydian did. Which is why we dumped on him.

Though I fail to see how RAM is relevant. ROM, maybe, but not RAM.

That's too easy. Like talking about untested games and Lufia II.

Well, you can edit the names to lowercase. I did, the very first time I played the game.

Why? I mean, there's one FF6 "retranslation" out there that tries exactly that, and IMHO it sucks balls.

You can't blame SCEA for LoD. It was developed for the US. All poor writing can be solely blamed on the development team.

Card Fighters Clash is packed with typos, bad grammar and bad/inconsistent translation, and it's not even in engrish.
I wish I had some screens to make this post less lame.

Yeah, but it's from SNK. Bad/inconsistent is kind of given in that case.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.
