So, SFIV is going to have 3D graphics.

Yeah, I've seen it. It looks like complete puke, though how could it be any different?
Seriously, look how they move. They're stiff fucking plastic barbie dolls. It's a mannequin fight. Especially compared to SF3 or something like Garou:Mark of the Wolves.

Meh. It's 2d gameplay with 3d graphics, essentially a souped up Street Fighter Ex. Not having hate, just stating a fact.
If you make a fighting game with Street Fighter Ex engine than yes, the animation will be really bad (see SFIV vid) but it's not about 2d or 3d really. Games like Soul Calibur or Virtual Fighter have extremely fluid animations.snkcube wrote:Shouldn't we be more worried about how the game plays instead of the way it looks? I mean, sure, graphics play part of the experience, but so does the gameplay. I know that almost all 3D fighters won't be able to match the fluidly sprite animations of a 2D fighter such as SFIII.

Has there been any confirmation that SFIV uses the SF:EX engine? I don't recall reading anything related to it.Snark wrote:If you make a fighting game with Street Fighter Ex engine than yes, the animation will be really bad (see SFIV vid) but it's not about 2d or 3d really. I haven't seen any "confirmations" nor will there ever be one. When I say it uses SFex's "engine" it's a figure of speech. I mean the game's mechanism/engine are highly similar.snkcube wrote:Has there been any confirmation that SFIV uses the SF:EX engine? Of course, you'll have 'parrying' (most likely) and all the stuff that was in SF3 but essantially: it's SF3+SFex = SF4
Unlike SF3 I doubt there will be much of a competition scene that will come outof this.
edit: whoops, no parry system it seems.

Really good overview that changed my opinion on the game:

Saw it, it really looks nice in motion, and I liked what the Japanese dude said about changing the system in order for novice and experts to play along without feeling their skills inferior/superior.casualsax3 wrote:Really good overview that changed my opinion on the game:

It's 3D because it's cheaper and easier to develop 3D now.blackmyst wrote:Yeah, I've seen it. It looks like complete puke, though how could it be any different?

So says a 2D developer.
You'd think a company like Capcom could afford the extra cost of making it in 2D then instead of using cheap 3D.Gil_Hamilton wrote:It's 3D because it's cheaper and easier to develop 3D now.blackmyst wrote:Yeah, I've seen it. It looks like complete puke, though how could it be any different?

I think in this case it has more to do with modern consoles using higher resolution and most gamers today being morons with a "3D is always better than 2D, even for games with 2D gameplay"-attitude.
Yes, most likely not an artistic reason. I mean it's a gimmick...2D fighter with 3D gameplay? It makes little sense, why not produce 'Asteroid' and put 3D graphic on top of it, but the game would remain 2D? Not to mention that kind of "2.5D" tend to produce mixed results (again, see SFex)Johan_Hanberg wrote:You'd think a company like Capcom could afford the extra cost of making it in 2D then instead of using cheap 3D.Gil_Hamilton wrote:It's 3D because it's cheaper and easier to develop 3D now.blackmyst wrote:Yeah, I've seen it. it doesn't matter if they CAN do it, they're a business and businesses try to be cost effective. To be honest with you I think people are a lot more receptive to 2D OVERALL then they used to be. I mean good luck finding someone in 1995 that would tell you that 2D was better than 3D, sure games from back then looked like crap, but 3D was new then, and everyone wanted a taste. I think people are more receptive to 2D now because while everyone was starting to make 3D fighters back then, there haven't been a lot of NEW 3d fighters that have been successful while new 2d fighters like Guilty Gear have become very successful.Johan_Hanberg wrote:You'd think a company like Capcom could afford the extra cost of making it in 2D then instead of using cheap 3D.Gil_Hamilton wrote:It's 3D because it's cheaper and easier to develop 3D now.blackmyst wrote:Yeah, I've seen it. Wasn't that just a port of the sprite-based PS1/PC game?creaothceann wrote:You mean, like Asteroids Hyper 64?Snark wrote:[...]

while not as hardcore as most in here about this, after reading the EGM article from last month or so, i think the game is in good hands.
i'm hoping his team has the skills to bring his full vision out.
and was there as big a fuss when metroid went 3D? it seems that metroid as a franchise is up there with street fighter.
in the video, he's saying a lot of the same things he said in the EGM interview.
EDIT: because it's pretty much a video of the interview that ended up in the magazine. took until shane asked a question and the EGM thing under his name showed up.

Indeed there WAS a fuss.sweener2001 wrote: and was there as big a fuss when metroid went 3D? it seems that metroid as a franchise is up there with street fighter.
Lot of people were running around calling Prime teh death of the franchise and hailing Fusion as the one true sequel.
....
Funny how that turned out.
But this isn't Street Fighter's FIRST foray into 3D.
The EX series is pretty well-loathed, and I think that's spilling over into SF4..
(and really, SF4 is only 3D in the same way that, say, Viewtiful Joe or Donkey Kong Country is.... well, more than DKC, but you get the idea).
I think I've already had this duscussion. It's not a very good comparison. With Prime, the change to 3D was completely justified by gameplay differences. On top of that, we still got 2D incarnations in the form of Fusion and Zero Mission. Not so with SF.sweener2001 wrote:and was there as big a fuss when metroid went 3D? it seems that metroid as a franchise is up there with street fighter.
It doesn't matter if the game is is "good hands" or not, the simple fact that they chose to abandon handdrawn animation inherently means that it loses something. Look at the pictures of Chun Li. Look at the victory pose with the V sign. It looks dead. But that's just the still images, in motion the characters look floaty, robotic, motorized. Like window mannequins come alive. You've all seen the videos. It looks retarded.
