PS2 question
Moderator: General Mods
This "Laser Radiation" you speak of, is just a red laser (assuming you're speaking of PS2 and not PS1), which you shouldn't look at with the naked eye, but its not carcenagenic radiation or nothin.
Any way, even if is PS1 and it is only emitting an infa-red laser.
Its of no harm unless you look directly at it with the naked eye.
And if there's no power, neither IR or R laser are harmful..... because there won't be any laser..... of any kind! >_<

Hardware means nothing if you don't have good software.

Actually, I know "Laser radiation" is simply the laser itself. I used the term because that's what written on the box but yes, let's just call it laser period. And by "risk" I did meant specifically to the eyes (it's specifically mentioned on the warning anyway)
I guess my question should have been: Is there any potential way the laser could still be present when the unit is off and unplugged?
Like: Hypothetical worse case scenario;
The unit is Off and Unplugged and I push the on/off switch many times so as to remove or (try to remove) any residual electricity (or whatever it's called) left and someone staaaaaaaaaare and staaaaaaare directly at the lens...it should still be safe, correct?
If you're 100% sure of this (or if someone else knowledgeable can also vouch for this) then alright, thanks for the info. And if there's no power, neither IR or R laser are harmful..... because there won't be any laser..... of any kind! >_<
double sigh.
turning off the power and unplugging it is going to keep you safe from a number of things, not only laser emissions.
and those warning stickers are real, with precise terminology about the level of risk. however, lame disclaimers in internet guides are another matter entirely.
wear sunglasses? christ almighty.... too bad the franpa alert system was dismantled due to budget reallocation.

Just don't look at the laser directly (that is, position your eye right over it). If it's not working (i.e. not plugged or on) there's no risk in there at all. My gf's brother fixes PS2's all the time, and I've never actually seen him wear any glasses of any kind.

Just to be sure; I did thought what franpa wrote was a silly (if not downright dangerously "Darwin Awardish") suggestion.whicker wrote:double sigh.

Anyway, better be too cautious (well, within reason) than not enough I guess. Now, my problem is getting those extremely tiny PS2 drive screws out. Managed one but the others won't budge. Probably have to get an electric screwdriver or something.

Lasers are light beams of a set energy.
That energy affects their colour and effects.
Invisible, low:
Radio waves don't interact much with organic compounds.
Microwaves are absorbed by some molecular bonds, and transformed into heat. Heat causes cellular contents to boil, so avoid intense exposure from human-made sources (read: MASERs, microwave tubes).
IR is absorbed by molecular bonds and transformed into heat (that's how the sun warms you). Doesn't affect water as much as microwaves, but still avoid intense exposure to sensible parts (IR lasers can damage your retina).
Visible light doesn't interact much with animal life. Of course you can see it, and be blinded by too much of it in your eyes.
Invisible, high:
UV is getting powerful enough to go through your cells and damage them. Fortunately the earth's atmosphere absorbs all the very dangerous ones, leaving the low (UVA) and some mid (UVB) energy ones. Cells can reparate themselves to a degree, but avoid prolonged exposure.
Xrays pack a punch and you don't want to be in the way. Reduce exposure to a minimum. Fortunately there aren't many natural sources, but most are of electrical nature (high tension fields + hot metal).
Gamma rays are the high energy stuff that blows holes in your cells and doesn't even feel it. Most earthbound sources are radioactive in nature - avoid them (no shit !).

then there's the possibility that whoever manages edgeemu decided not to pay his accounts and let them expire.
