Programs crashing via network

Post by neo_bahamut1985 »

Okay, so I have two PCs on a wireless network and most programs work fine on PC B when I access the HDD from PC A . Now, my issue is this; certain programs crash or don't load at all. Take Kega Fusion for example(BTW, the version no. is irrelevant), when I open it on PC B, it almost loads up and gives me the infamous "windows encountered an error" message and completely crashes. Regen doesn't load at all. Nestopia (1.3x) loads fine, but asks me "E:\NES\Nestopia\Save doesn't exist , create a new directory?" as soon as I open. I went ahead clicked "yes" and tells me I can't make one! I tried to create a savestate and tells me I can't make that, either! Now, I have all of PC A's main HDD security settings set to "share this on the network" and "allow users to change the files" so that I make saves on PC B. What the bloody heck is going on!? The ironic thing is, under the exact same settings, SNESGT and its savestate/loadstates work flawlessly.

tip: make sure each computer has their own copy of the program.
Does [Kevin] Smith masturbate with steel wool too?

- Yes, but don’t change the subject.

yeah, the only shared should be the l33t warez RAWMz files, see below...

it seems the problem lies on how the program(s) can handle network directories vs normal (abosolute / relative) directories...

example:
  • "\\PC_A\E\NES\Nestopia\config.cfg"
    .vs.
  • "E:\NES\Nestopia\Saves\config.cfg"
    .vs.
  • ".\config.cfg"

Right, but strangely enough; I don't have to use another copy of SnesGT. I use it directly from the other PC. But to launch Kega, Regen, etc I have to have a copy on both PCs?

Different programs will behave differently, but you really should run software locally.

Makes sense as to having the program mirrored on both PCs (crap..shoulda considered doing that earlier)! I'll try that and no, there are not any usage restrictions on the other PCs HDD (security-wise).
