can't set up/down/left/right buttons on gamepad

I can't seem to set the up/down/left/right directions on the gamepad I have here. I've run it through the joystick colaboration tool and it detects all the buttons as well as the directional pad. But in zsnes the directional pad doesn't seem to respond at all. I can set the a, b, x, y, l, and r buttons though. I've got an interact propad 6 gamepad.

Fixed. Apparently I had jscallibrator installed and that was interfering. So I removed it and all of its configuration files and then rebooted.

I also seem to need to run zsnes as root in order for it to read the up/down/left/right of the d-pad on it. Strange, but since this is for a mythtv box, I used visudo to make sure sudo lets me run zsnes as root always without asking for a password.
