wii problem

Post by adventure_of_link »

Lately, once in awhile, out of fucking nowhere, my wii won't so much as read a disk. Accessing a channel while it is in this state will just cause the screen to go blank. Rebooting the wii takes it out of this mode.

I don't use the wii to watch DVD movies, and it is unmodded (with the exception of the homebrew channel, if that matters.) I'm running Wii firmware version 3.4. Any idea here
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

hmm, never had that problem, had my wii since summer 07 and have the latest firmware out there. Don't know what's up dude. Is this a reoccurring problem?

could it be related to nintendo DRM to try and shut down the homebrew channel cos it's all emulators and ROMs but instead it's affecting the whole system :?

could be but I wouldn't just to any conclusions because I don't really have any proof of anything. is your wii in a confined space or is there a lot of dust? there are so many factors that could cause this although the things I just mentioned I guess don't really line up with what you are describing.

scratched disks? highly variable electric source?

my brother says while I was gone for several months my wii wouldn't read a disk (although he's known to put them in upside down, and I know this isn't your problem) and he said sometimes it would just hang on a black screen, or hang when trying to load a game, or not respond to the wii remote when turning the system on. He said it got really hot. Maybe your wii is overheating? he said it had plenty of ventilation but you never know. He said he didn't really use it for several months and I came back and it worked fine.

I never really experienced anything like this but the only things I could suggest are maybe a future firmware update or seeing if your wii gets hot even if it shouldn't be.

If the warranty is still valid, trade it in for a new one if possible, while you still can.

My fan jammed and I had to restart it, all the plastic gamecube cover pieces are coming off, I've dropped it a ton of times, I'm 3.1 and never even anyregion changed, and a little rubber piece got jammed in my dvd drive and only gamecube discs could fit then because they were smaller

after I opened it up and took that out and fixed all the other problems later I'm still running it just fine but never have experienced what you're going through except that instead of just not reading my discs it wasn't fully taking them into the drive, deceptive. The flap was covering what was left sticking out, lol

though it almost sounds like an IOS problem! blank channels..

I thought installation of things like the homebrew channel voids the warranty :? (and yes I know that it can be easily removed btw)

Grin, panzer, others: I've had the wiu for a little over a month, I doubt the fan could get clogged that easily. However, I'll check to see if it is overheating. Also, I've got the wii near my LCD HDTV ATM, so I doubt any EMI could be emitting from the tv.

I heard someone sent one in with homebrew channel but no hard mods and they charged an extra violation fee but still would repair it

If the hb channel can be rasily removed, what are you waiting for? Remove it and you'll probably get a full replace with no "violation charge" (as gllt put it).

Much better to trade it in for a new one, instead of putting up with a faulty wii in any case.
Is it easy to install the homebrew channel?

I'm sure he's holding out for a less hassle solution. Not to mention the chance of loss of internal memory which would be a pain in the ass. It probably wouldn't happen but I would recommend backing up everything on an SD card if you do decide to take such action.

I believe Nintendo gives you the option to have them transfer over your data to the new Wii. And also, installing the Homebrew Channel shoudn't void your warranty, as you didn't open the Wii to do some modifications.

that option doesn't exist as far as i know. it would take a couple minutes to back up saves, unless he's already played a hundred different games.

and removing the HBC would only take another couple minutes, and it's always better to play it safe, than to be sorry later.

just send it in. take advantage of the warranty.

Thanks for the suggestions, and the jumping the gun of LOL SEND IT TO NINTENDERSSS

I heard something like that. I've read of a disk that Nintendo uses to do several nifty things with the wii, including but not limited to:

* change your wii console ID
* backup your saves
* view registers
* other nifty things

Good to hear. :)

Nice tip. I've been swapping the SD card out of the digital camera here and there. Soon enough I'll get an official wii SD card (tm).

1) I'd like to see if it's something else doing it first and see if it can be fixable
2) see http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Twilight_Hack on how to get the homebrew channel on an unmodded wii. it even works with firmware 3.4.

In any case, I just fired up my wii so my mom could play pool on Wii Play. so far it's worked without a hitch. If it comes up again, I'll keep all these posts in mind. Thanks all.

AoL:

for your wii issues I have a solution.

my Wii was starting to make a really loud noise when running disks, and then my brawl disk that had no scratches wouldn't work (because it is a dual layer disk)

this is a common problem, and because of this fuck up, Nintendo is providing great service.

Even if your brawl game works, all you have to do is go to this site

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/repair ... s_ssbb.jsp

fill out the form, get the Nintendo Address from the UPS website they provide, get your wii and brawl game and put em in a box, pack it well, put the printed address with barcode on the box, drop it in a UPS drop box, and they will fix your wii and send it back inside of a week.

I just did this myself, it fixed my brawl issue and it also stopped making the noise when running other games.

I know several people that have also done this, even more than once, and they do not even upgrade the wii to 3.4, in fact they downgraded mine to 3.3U

they also don't mess with any of your save data, but you'll have to put the channels back out on the main screen, but all your saves are still intact.

You might want to remove the Homebrew Channel just for the heck of it but I've heard people have sent it in with it and the they didn't mess with it.

Also remember to remove your SD card.

I heard a guy dropped his wii off his table and it had issues, he sent it in with brawl and they fixed the whole thing inside of a week.

zero cost to you, they pay for shipping and everything.

Because of their fuck up with brawl and the whole dual layered games we pretty much get free wii repair for life.

Holy thread resurrection Batman, I thought this thread went up in smoke back when the board couldn't delete properly :?

In any case thanks for the tip Panzer. Keep in mind these issues happened long before I got my brawl, and for the most part the issue has seemed to take care of itself -shrug-

And panzer, as soon as I got my wii I upgraded mine to 3.4 anyway.

yeah, I wouldn't have sent mine in if brawl hadn't stopped working and I don't really use the HBC right now and have mine updated to 3.4, anyways, just thought I'd pass the word on since it does work.

Actually, that's pretty much standard Nintendo customer service - absolutely amazing.

My nephew *BROKE* the GBA connector on his DS. They repaired it for free with a little note suggesting to be more careful as that wasn't really covered under the warranty.

They also repaired my other niece & nephews' out-of-warranty Wii for free when it started scratching discs - and replaced the two game discs that had been scratched by the system.

While they might not be in touch with their fanbase all the time, Nintendo definitely knows how to treat a customer, and they regularly go above and beyond any reasonable expectations.
Why yes, my shift key *IS* broken.

I think the fact that it was free and the whole process only took a week does go above and beyond.
