Television emulation...

Post by ryanj »

i'm sure this has been discussed to death already, but on the offchance: i saw this on rockpapershotgun.com and immediately thought of my favorite SNES emulator.

as much as i love the blur-o-vision filters in zsnes, this looks like a decent stab at emulating an ancient CRT.

Why does anyone want to make the picture look worse?

But even so, you should be able to tweak the NTSC filter to make it look as you want.

The "texture" effect seems highly questionable to me. Those flat areas of color actually LOOKED LIKE flat areas of color on a real system.

Of course this depends on your definition of "worse". To me a sharp, unfiltered, blocky image is the absolute worst way to present a SNES game for example.

(edit) Ok no wait I lied. HQxX is the worst.

Well, it is inherently impossible to simulate a glowy old TV on a PC display anyway, just like it is impossible to accurately simulate in a picture what a glowing lightbulb really looks like to us in real life. Of course even if it was, everybody remembers it differently because in olden times there was great variety in TV picture quality. I guess all they can do is try their best to simulate what they remember.

For some reason whenever I try starting the NTSC filter my comp crashes. It never happens on other comps. Must be my graphic card.
