Using a Front End (MAMECab) and ZSNES

Gamepad acting up? Keyboard not responding properly? Can't get that other user to work? Read and post about it here.

Using a Front End (MAMECab) and ZSNES

Post by indecks »

Hello all, sorry to post a question for help as my first post here but I've got a question regarding the 1-0 keys on the keyboard and ZSNES.

I've got ZSNES running on my mamecab so I have the Joystick and pushbuttons on the control panel replacing the SNES pads. It's easy enough to assign the keys to the control panel but my question comes to the start button.

The way the Control Panel is interfaced with the PC is using a JPAC as the cabinet it's in is a 'real' arcade machine rather than a custom built one with a TV and so on. So the start button or the "P1" button on the CP is mapped on the keyboard as the 1 key. In ZSNES, the 1 key is used to enable or disable the background (i believe, or maybe one of the other items). Is there any way to DISABLE this option for the keyboard keys? I looked in the options area, the input area and I see nothing that allows me to change or remove that ability. Because of this when I hit start on the player 1 pad I'm starting the game, but I'm also disabling the background!

Is there any way around this? Thanks for your help, and for a great emulator.

By default, 1 disables background layer 1.
I believe the MISC menu will let you remap/disable that feature.

Personally, I always thought it'd be easier to reconfigure MAME to use enter as start than reconfigure everything else to use 1 as start.

Normally, yes but my setup has limited real estate. I want the cab looking as 'stock' as possible, so I don't have a trillion buttons and spinners and trackballs everywhere, heh. I've got a "street fighter" config, just 1P and 2P start, 2 joys and 6 buttons per, so the 1P is my actual start button.

Thanks for the tip though, I've got it sorted now. Thanks!

I didn't say a thing about adding more buttons.

I said that to me, it made more sense to have 1P Start mapped as Return, and reprogram MAME to use Return for 1P Start. INSTEAD of having 1P Start mapped as 1 in the first place.

There's a strange assumption in the arcade cab scene that MAME defaults are the ONLY way to map controls.

They aren't the only way, they are the simplest way. Using defaults on the configuration I'm using is the quickest and most efficient way of doing things. It's quite literally plug-and-play. All I had to do was change one option in ZSNES, rather than editing any mame.ini or .cfg files.

I KNOW you had to do more than that for ZSNES, and wouldn't have had to open a single INI file to change it in MAME.

Never mind. We're on different pages. Possibly even different books.

No, other than the controller settings (up, down, etc) all I had to change was the 1 and 2 buttons.

Maybe we are on different pages, but you seem to be a bit antagonistic, so I'd suggest some lighter reading.
