Can't progress in Splinter Cell (PC port)

Post by nintendo_nerd »

Sure, this game is really old, but it's also fun in my opinion. I have a backed up ISO of the game which I run off of (it's patched to run off the .exe itself), and for the most part, it runs very well. Yeah, newer cards can't t show the dynamic lighting effects, but it runs a at 60FPS+. But here's the weird part, when I had this installed a long time ago, the game was beatable (and have beaten it many times) and going from one part of a level to another wasn't an issue until now. The issue is, after getting the SC-20K AR in the CIA HQ level, you're supposed to be able to ride the elevator, right? Well, I got the gun alright, but the elevator will still not power on! Did some level-related file get corrupted when the backup was made or what? Again, I've gotten past this level many times in the past, so why not now? Heck, this is just as perplexing as to why Pandora Tomorrow doesn't have dynamic lighting, either....*Sigh* this sucks.

CPU: Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz
RAM: 2048MB DDR2 SDRAM
GPU: eVGA GeForce GTS 250 (1024MB GDDR3)
DirectX: 11.0 Shader Version: 3.0/4.0/5.0 (I think)
Dual OS: Windows 7 RC7100 and Windows XP Home SP3

Okay, let me rephrase that; newer games, like Chaos Theory do have dynamic lighting with old and new drivers alike. BUT, games like Splinter Cell 1 and 2 do NOT.

Edit 7:03PM

Here are screenshots of the game, A and B

A: What the dynamic lighting should look like
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh13 ... nangle.jpg

B: What the dynamic lighting shouldn't look like
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh13 ... ghting.jpg

The lighting effects only show when the camera is at a certain angle or when you're close to the light source (i.e. the Jerusalem level); the light "disappears" off the ground when you get too close.

disable Anti-aliasing. Splinter Cell and Pandora Tomorrow do not behave with anti-aliasing.

Chaos Theory and Double Agent are each have their own set of issues.

In regards to the CIA level, chances are, you probably missed something.

Interesting....never thought AA could screw something up, but I'll give that a shot and get back with you.

Edit 8:03AM: So, in the nVidia control panel, I forced all Anti-aliasing features to "off" and after running the game again, and after resetting all the DefUser and Default.ini settings to their default, I'm still getting weird lighting issues (disappearing light casting and water getting dark and missing like in the pictures I linked to). And as far as the CIA HQ level, from the game faqs I've read, that happens when one tries to leave in the elevator and didn't get the SC-20K which I already got before I left the room it was in. I have the latest 185.85 (non beta) drivers. Heck, it worked fine on my old 9600 GT, but one of the newer drivers screwed it all up, but as to which old version of drivers worked, I have no clue; it would take forever to track down that version. Or would the beta drivers work better? Is this because of Direct X 10 or what?

Edit 8:31AM: I managed to get dynamic lighting to work on the first Splinter Cell by first, making a shortcut and then added " -shadowmode=projector" at the end of the executable line, and it now has proper lighting....but Pandora Tomorrow....

I don't see the 182 drivers for Windows 7 32-bit, but the lowest is 181 according to this: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
(after selecting GTS 250) or March 2 2009.

Uh, wouldn't using Vista drivers on Windows 7 have adverse affects, or are they the similar in structure?

there the same but lack WDDM 1.1 support/compliance and Windows 7 supports WDDM 1.0 drivers perfectly fine.

anti-aliasing is something that's better set to let the application choose.

Sorry for the slight bump, but the Vista Drivers didn't work (another busy week at college), so, I tried putting it on another computer and, since that one has a 7800 (?), the lighting effects actually work. I don't know if it's due to the fact that the game doesn't like shader 2.0 (?) or later, but as to why newer cards don't run it properly is beyond me...

Even after installing 182.50 Vista 32 drivers and switching compatibility modes (Vista SP1 and SP2 modes), it still will not show properly....Again, it use to show properly on my old 9600GT, on some very old drivers (maybe 180.xx?), but after a new version came out, it stopped working. I even altered the .ini files (VolumetricLighting from "False" to "True" and 32BitTextures from "False" to "True"). Nope. Not a thing. Vsync, Anti-aliasing, etc are all set to application controlled and are neither disabled or forced on. I've heard of people being able to do this on newer cards, so, what gives?

Sorry, my tone wasn't conveyed that well. I was rather meaning that you shouldn't use compat modes during driver installation.

try turning of 32bit zbuffering if possible.

It's all good, but I did switch modes after installing the drivers (to SP2) and in the configuration file, I don't see 32bit zbuffering, but 32bitTextures...perhaps I'll use the nvidia control panel. Unless I can somehow add the value in the text file...

Edit 8:17AM: Nope, neither of these methods works. I even created a shortcut and added "--shadowmode=projector" (without "") and that didn't do anything, either.
