Wii DVD playback concerns

Okay, I just installed the dvdx plugin for the wii and I looked online and noticed that many HBC programs utilize (Snes9xGX, FceuGC, Mplayer, etc)
this. What I want to know is, will playing non-wii discs (DVD-R and DVD-RW) in the wii's disc drive screw things up over time, (i.e the laser)?
I would find it nice to put games onto a DVD.

If it did, then it would also affect Nintendo Wii games since they are DVD discs as well.

Alright, just making sure. I thought it was some really screwed up DVD-like proprietary format, but, I'm okay.

That DVD lens thing you heard is all BS. Playing DVDs on the Wii is fine.

It's the same physical media, just with a non-standard data format.

And you can't screw up an optical drive by putting the wrong kind of disk in.

actually mine did crap out on me but that was before I had ever done any homebrew, that's just nintendo failing at life.

yeah pretty much, the wii didn't stop working, it just stopped reading dual layer disks like smash bros.

Nintendo was totally cool about it though and had it back to me in a few days at no charge to myself.
