Starforce Protection is evil
Okay, so, a while back, I downloaded games, notably, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and immediately decided to make up for my download by buying the retail version off of Amazon. Well, when I had the downloaded version, it worked just fine on Windows XP AND on Windows 7 (which is very similar to Vista). BUT, when I got the DVD today and installed without any apparent issues. How wrong I was. I'm sure many of you have heard of Ubisoft's asinine Starfall protection their games have, and the pain it brings to those who see it. Well, even after forcing Windows XP mode on the game, I get a message "Application has been installed successfully. Please reboot your computer to complete installation. Continue?" or something to that effect and I chose "yes" at least three times now, and surprise, surprise, it doesn't work. Any advice on how to get this bloody program to work? (and no, I don't have an Xbox either). Screw ubisoft is all I can say. But seriously, why did it work on the same OS before and not now? I'm thinking whoever released the torrent before added a protection removal patch...too bad those are illegal.

I believe that I, someone who went to the trouble of purchasing software from a company like Ubisoft, should have every right to play it on an OS it was never meant to be used on in the first place. This proves the theory that the company cares exclusively about the revenue and never the customer.

To be fair: Starforce is damn good, protection wise.
It stopped SCCT from being reversed for a year.
Not to mention its VM hell, obfuscation are plenty, and ironically some of the SF devs were in a cracking group in the past.
Got to love irony.
Same with Securom. The same people developing it, are the same people that were in HOODLUM.

*Sigh* This is just a bunch of BS if you ask me. The developers can go piss up a rope for all I care....I mean, I've seen so-called "guides" that tell you how to "remove" the non-plug and play device from the control panel and so-called starforce removal software, but nothing works and finding patches to remove it are really hard to find. This sucks.

Yeah, well I'm still pissed that I can't play TIE Fighter on my Core 2 Duo under Windows XP. Or Tyrian.nintendo_nerd wrote:I believe that I, someone who went to the trouble of purchasing software from a company like Ubisoft, should have every right to play it on an OS it was never meant to be used on in the first place.
*insert OpenTyrian link here, now STFU and let me make my point*
The average support cycle for a non-MMMORPG game is a year or two. Titles such as Starcraft and Worms: Armageddon are few and far between.
Ubisoft doesn't give a damn that you bought Splinter Cell YEARS after they quit printing it.
Hey, I got SW Rogue Squadron working on Vista/Win7/XP by custom ASM hacks/cracks, so don't laugh >.<
I was talking from a protection sense, not from a end user protection sense. I could hardly care less if you can't find RELOADED's, VITALITY's, or others Starforce hacks.
And you completely missed my point.*Sigh* This is just a bunch of BS if you ask me. Yes, it was made for Win95/98, with a Win16 based installer and all.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Wasn't Rogue Squadron made for Windows 95?mudlord wrote:Hey, I got SW Rogue Squadron working on Vista/Win7/XP by custom ASM hacks/cracks, so don't laugh >.<
If it was a DOS-only game, I'll be WAY more impressed.
Not that I'm not already, but...

Since that's the case, it gives me all the more justification in my finding of unofficial patches for their game. Had I known that running this on newer OSes was going to be such a pain, I'd have kept that torrent....Gil_Hamilton wrote: Ubisoft doesn't give a damn that you bought Splinter Cell YEARS after they quit printing it.

and now we know why you're going all righteous ohnoes
you trashed the working pirate before even checking if the other one worked
i'd welcome you to suck land, but you're already the king's buffoon there
now learn this and apply it:
'tis better to stfu and let people think you're a moron, than to whine far and wide and remove any doubt

Just thought I'd also chime in to report that both of these games should be fully playable on a Core 2 Duo system using DOSBox. That is all.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Yeah, well I'm still pissed that I can't play TIE Fighter on my Core 2 Duo under Windows XP. Or Tyrian.
