General sound/freeze problems across several games.

Post by kechv »

Sorry to bother if this has already been answered before, but I'm running the lastest version of zsnes (btw i'm too stupid to learn the name of the emulator) and recently I've had problems where games will lose sound/freeze when loading, or lose sound and then freeze when I try to load something up, like a menu or a new screen.

For example, in Chrono Trigger, when I try to talk to Spekkio in The End of Time to initiate a battle, the game will freeze up and the sound will go off. I tried loading up my save state, saving regularly in the game, and resetting/reloading.

I was able to fight Spekkio, but since loading then, sound in CT is now off and I can't manage to turn it back on. I check other roms, but they work fine. I tried DOS ZSNES, the sound is still gone.

Second example, when opening up inventory or status menus in Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2, my game will often lose sound and I will be unable to cross into other rooms without freezing. However, if I never open up these menus things seem to be fine.

What confuses me is that sometimes I can open up these menus upon loading my save state, but once I go into a new room, finish a battle, and attempt to open a menu the problem reoccurs.

I seem to be noticing this problem across all roms whenever long load times are involved. This has happened before on the second computer the ROM has been on, but not the first.

I have checked all the cheksums when loading up ZSNES and they all say OK.

Anyone know what's wrong?

Off the top of my head, I'd say run an adware/spyware scan followed by a virusscan.

Just tried, it's still bugged =(

Tried restarting comp too.

This has happened to me before and it's fixed itself before, I don't know how though.

I tried saving normally and loading again...

Sound is gone, but the game stops freezing at least.

In fact it seems when I load up roms normally they have no sound, only my save states do, but the music stops playing after something loads up and I guess that causes it to freeze?

I have no idea what's wrong

Also when I load up SD3 normally I get a checksum fail now

Post the rom's checksums, or their information given by NSRT.

I tried making a new directory and moving all of my files there, and it worked, strange..

but now Seiken Densetsu 3 has a problem where only the most recent state works, while the other 9 play music but are frozen in the state they were saved..

Working on getting the file/info

Ok now I tried deleting zquicfgw zsnesw.cfg and now everything works fine after I remapped everything..

What happened? =P

Between many of the various versions of ZSNES, savestate compatibility+config files (the .dat+.cfg files that get generated by ZSNES) continue to change and are incompatible between versions.

The rule of thumb is (it should be a sticky or something in the documentation) that you need to remove the .dat+.cfg file when you install a newer version of ZSNES.. and also that more likely than not that savestate between versions may or may not work between versions (WIPs and official) to prevent what is happening to you.

Do not rely solely on savestates. Use SRAM saves instead.
