Dragon Warrior is the american version of Dragon Quest games.
Originally Dragon Warrior 1->4 got released on the NES states-side.

Dragon Quest 1&2, Dragon Quest 3 were remixed for the SNES japan-only, but a complete patch exists for DQ1&2.
Dragon Quest 5 and 6 got released for the SNES in japan and there's a DQ5 patch. DQ6 has patches but not complete. You can play the game (the untranslated stuff is not really important).

Well, in a nutshell, .ips files are applied to rom images of games (.sfc, .smc, etc) you could make a DQ5 english cart if you posess the knowledge to do it.

You need the rom image of the game, find it and then we can tell you how to use it. Please don't ask for it here, it is against the rules to ask for roms.

Dub4Life, this is much easier than you think it is. This is all done on the computer. You have a ROM image file which is a dump of the actual game cartridge, and then you apply a software patch. And play it on an emulator which emulator the SNES on your computer.

If you want to play on the real SNES, you have to get a device known as a copier/backup unit. Then you do the same process but load the modified ROM file into the copier via floppy or parallel cable and play it that way.

Figure out which dragon quest game you wanna play, let's say dragon quest 3. Search on the internet for 'dragon quest 3 snes rom' or something to that effect, and when you find it, download it (illegally I must say.) then go to that donut.parodius.com website and go to the dragon quest 3 page, and download 'the patch.' unzip both files, you'll have say 'Dragon Quest 3 (J).smc' and like 'Dq3a.ips' the .smc file is the game itself, the .ips file contains modifications to change the game from japanese to english. put these both in a folder, and rename them so they have the same name, like 'dq3.smc' and 'dq3.ips' and run zsnes. it will automatically combine the two files into your english game.

on a side note these patches don't magically come out of the tooth fairy's ass, they take lots of time to translate and reprogram by hand. so not every japanese game out there is playable in english. just most of the popular ones.

I love that statement! So true! So true!

Some of these translations take several YEARS to complete, so they indeed do not come out of the tooth fairy's ass! I wish they did, that would have saved me alot of work and free time.

Ooh, would I love to be able to Upload a Translated ROM to an old cart I
am not using anymore.
I would be able to play TOP or some other good game.
The real problem is geting a Copier.
They are REAL expensive and really rare to find.
ooh, if I only had the money.
Forget geting a Copier unless it has a Parallel Port Extension.
It is a better buy over a unit that only has a floppy drive.
Especially for those game Larger than 1.38MB, Why they even bothered
with a floppy, it was a waste of time.

I think they should redevelop Copiers ofr the old systems and put in Parallel and USB support, now that could be called progress.
