SPC700 Stall Detected?

Post by Teranni »

I was just in the middle of playing Star Ocean, and then I get this message and it freezes. Anyone know how I can fix it? :?:

I think Star Ocean has known problems on the real game cart itself. So what you're experiencing is "normal".

Just use Snes9x. It plays the game fine and the music works properly.

Well then my save file must be corrupt. Still does it on SNES9X. So I should just start over?

Did you use save states or cheats? They often muck saves up. I suggest you use neither and start again.

Yeah, I was using save states. I should just go about using normal saves, huh?

It's better to as it's much safer that way, especially with tempermental games like this one. Also, it's near-impossible to accidentally overwrite a normal save, and is 100% cross-emulator compatible.

So let's say I have a save file that's somewhat into the game. That won't be interfered with even if I state saved before?

You may get lucky and be able to play from your last normal save without a hitch, or you may encounter the same error again.

Bingo.
Real saves, unlike state saves, do not preserve the conditions that originally caused the crash in most cases(I can think of a few interesting ones in FF6/3 that are saved, but there's always an option to open the menu and change Sabin's weapon back away from Phoenix Down between when you load the save and when you get into your first fight).

Once the state save has saved the bad data that caused the crash, no amount of emulator swapping will fix it. Even if you were to kludge a way to load this state save into a real SNES, it would STILL crash.
