Seiken Densetsu 3 : Multi-Tap

Hi guys,
I guess this is probably the right section to put this in.
I've been trying to find out whether or not Seiken Densetsu 3 supports multi-tap.
I've been googling for the last 2 days. 50% of people say that it supports 2 players, unlike its predecessor. The other 50% say it supports 3 players, like its predecessor.
Both camps claim to have played 2/3 player games.
Even an FAQ on Neil Corlett's site says it has 3 players.

Every other forum this topic has come up on, has just turned into an argument between the 2-player and 3-player camps.

Can someone who actually knows put this issue to rest?

The game is two-player only.

Well, people might have played it with three players, seeing as how I'm sure there are hacks for that.

But the unmodified game allows for two players only. Why haven't you just tried it yourself?

I did try it myself. It didn't work!
But I thought maybe I was doing something wrong, despite 10 years of emulator usage.
So I googled, and was mildly distressed at the diversity of opinion on the matter.
If you or anyone else knows about a hack, please do say.
