ZSNES freezes up when configuring controller

When I try and set keys for my controller, zsnes doesn't respond from the point of "press the key or button to use for up". When the controller isn't plugged in it works perfectly using the keyboard. This is on my laptop, when I use the controller with zsnes on my desktop, it works fine. The controller is a saitek p220, the laptop is a dell. Any thoughts on what might be the problem?

I fixed the problem, got a logitech precision gamepad, it feels better than the saitek anyway and it's got the start/select buttons and the playstation layout with 4 buttons instead of 6, better d-pad.
