zsnes crashes after setting first direction

I was trying to set up my joystick, but after I set the "up" direction, it won't accept any further input. Originally, I was setting up controller 2, but it still behaves the same way trying to set controller 1.
I have checked the FAQ and there doesn't appear to be anything covering this type of problem. Has anyone had this kind of problem and managed to overcome it?

On the other hand, it's only $30 for a gamepad, so it might not be so bad after all.

USB port: Intel 82801DB/DBM
OS: WinXP home
Controller: Logitech Attack 3

calibrate your controller in the Windows Control Panel -> Game Controllers.
