Transferring save data

Post by Weirdofreak »

I tried to migrate my roms (well, only one of them so far) from Windows to Linux, but it doesn't seem to be recognising my save files. I moved the files:
Final Fantasy 3.zip
Final Fantasy 3.SRM
Final Fantasy 3.ZS2
Final Fantasy 3.ZST
Final Fantasy 3.ZS9
And FF3.zip contained just
Final Fantasy 3 - Version 1.0 (US).smc
When I started playing, it didn't recognise my save files or states.
Am I missing a file? There was nothing else beginning with Final Fantasy 3 in my roms folder on the Windows, and I couldn't see any all-purpose save files - I assume that the .srm file is the save data, and the only thing I can think of for the ZS* ones are save states. My zsnesl.cfg and zsnesw.cfg files both have SaveDirectory blank.

Aah - just did another test. It seems that if I save a state and then delete all the files except the .zip I can still load that state. Very confused now. I haven't tested the same with actual saves, because it takes too long to get to a place to save on that game, but my assumption is that the same would happen.

I have version 1.337 on the Linux box, and the Windows box says it's also got version 1.337 but version 1.0 of the Windows port. Any help'd be great.

For saves to be recognized, the srm and zs* files must have the rom's name.
Example:

FF3.smc -> FF3.srm and FF3.zs*

If your ROM is compressed (as zip for example) make sure both names (in and out the archive) are the same and that should take care of it:

FF3.smc in FF3.zip -> FF3.srm and FF3.zs*

On a side note, I highly advise you to update your zsnes. You can get the latest WIP sources along with windows/dos builds at ipher's zsnes wip page.

I didn't rename anything while transferring, so it should still work with the same names. I did try taking out the plain .smc file though and renaming it to just Final Fantasy 3.smc, but still no luck when I try to run it.

Try making the extensions of the saves lower-case.

Yes. *nix operating systems are usually case-sensitive (depending on the file system?).
