Wow, some of you people have no soul. :(
Bioshock? Yeah, except that came out 3 and a half years later. At its time, Doom 3 was a gigantic step forward in immersion and presentation. So much in fact, that, if anyone played it when it came out and seriously claims that it was a bad game, I can't help but question the integrity of their opinion.

Immersion and presentation is all well and good, but it takes a back seat to playability.

What exactly did doom 3 bring to the table that was such a giant step forward?blackmyst wrote:At its time, Doom 3 was a gigantic step forward in immersion and presentation.
I think, given your posts, everyone would question the integrity of your opinionblackmyst wrote:So much in fact, that, if anyone played it when it came out and seriously claims that it was a bad game, I can't help but question the integrity of their opinion.

Probably nothing exciting, but after playing it (never finished it).. it was pretty great. I don't think it meant to bring something radically new, but after Doom 2 being in hiatus for a while, it's actually pretty refreshing.MisterJones wrote:What exactly did doom 3 bring to the table that was such a giant step forward?blackmyst wrote:At its time, Doom 3 was a gigantic step forward in immersion and presentation.

I liked what i've seen of Doom 3 (I haven't been able to play it to the very end), but I still think that they created a very artificial dificulty with the damn lamp. Other than that, it's a good game... GOOD, not awesome, but good.

Graphically, i find the models don't look as plastic as they do on screenshots. The whole graphic engine is great, and Quake 4 is a proof of that.
The beginning of the game is not bad. Unfortunately, not much changes through the course of the game - you still fight imp-likes and zombies as if they were a novelty, get a bunch of "surprise" ambushes behind doors, watch a futuristic military bunker/laboratory, deal with bridges and platforms puzzles, and get to hear a stupid voice laughing at you all the time. I know I said this a few posts before, but I still see many people have failed to acknowledge these things i find annoying.
I heard the RoE expansion kind of addressed some of that, but I don't thing I will bother.
On that matter, anyone here played Doom64? I found it to be reasonably good, despite the lack of some monsters.

doom3 did not immerse or present better than HL.
now gears of war, that's a game right there. great graphics, excellent implementation of the third person view, and a complete blast on co-op.
but i think i've got to give it to CoD4. fantastic, AND a great story that's well told.
