Actually Culex is a mistranslation, and it was SUPPOSED to be a character in FFIV, but he never got to the final version.

I don't remember where I read it (actually, I think it was in an Amano picture), but one of the three goddesses in FFVI was actually a monster that never made it in FFIV that was going to be called Codex (as in a book that contains written literacy). He was so changed that he ended up not looking at all like he used to ("he's" the only goddess you fight that's in the middle of the screen... Poltergeist).

Supposedly he appears in the jap rom (I read that on ZOphar), but I've searched and I found nothing else on him.

CULEX actually sounds more vigorous than CODEX. CODEX sounds like something programmers use in the programs that they work on. CULEX sounds COOL like LATEX and COOL mixed together so when you would fight the otherworldly beast from monstro town, CULEX makes so much a better boss.
