Vista is out
Moderator: General Mods
1ghz athlon, 512MB pc100 ram, 30gig C, 80gig D, crappy ass video card, DVD+/-R burner that doesn't read cds. almost done installing.
I find it weird that the ram was causing a problem. I had some DDR ram but it wouldn't fit in this old motherboard. swapping the ram around caused vista to boot to a blank screen or mother board to beep, but eventually worked no prob. a few times it BSOD to 'stop 0x0000A5' or some shit.
edit: damn runs great! it's a little different from the usual windows but damn! only problem, it has no driver for my network card. same fricken problem I had 6 months ago when I installed a beta! piece of shit!!

Buy a new one... it would have to be really old to not have any support. You could probably install the XP drivers alternatively to get it working.phOnYmIkE wrote:edit: damn runs great! it's a little different from the usual windows but damn! only problem, it has no driver for my network card. same fricken problem I had 6 months ago when I installed a beta! piece of shit!!

okay how's this. I find a lan card labeled "microsoft mn-130" and slap it in. nope, no built in driver. wtf. so I gotta slap in a bunch of lan cards till I find one that works? fuck that. the only reason I use windows is because of compatibility. you plug shit in, you install whatever, it all works. had I just spent money on this and it didn't work, I'd be pissed. this is just a spare computer I use for solely for ripping dvds. it doesn't have amazing hardware, but it can do its thing while I use my main computer (the one I'm on now and at all times.) it didn't find drivers for the sound card and a few other useless things, but god damn, if it doesn't have a built in lan driver for these cards, and there's no vista drivers on the net, how are people supposed to connect to the internet and get drivers for this shit?
edit: using my trusty usb netgear wg111 and the drivers it came with it installed fine. so it's on the net and downloaded a driver for the pci net card. lesson learned: make sure your net card is supported by vista. without it, you can't get on the net and get other missing drivers.

Build 5728 had no driver for my network card. Well, I take that back. The bundled Marvell Yukon driver is compatible with my onboard 3C940 NIC, only the INF doesn't have the hardware IDs for anything but Marvell hardware, so I had to force install it. At least it's signed.Deathlike2 wrote:Buy a new one... it would have to be really old to not have any support. Hay, maybe they've changed since then, but I wasn't generous enough with the install partition to afford an upgrade, and I've kind of got so much crap on my main partition that I can't really resize the partitions right now.
The bundled driver for VIA SATA controller was also a piece of crap and responsible for sound crackling with cards and onboard alike, fixed by installing the driver from VIA's download package. It would be really stupid if they let this one slide into the release. Of course, a lot of people will probably just blame Creative without testing their other available sound devices to find that the crackling only gets worse, and happens to coincide with disk access. (Hurr, for all I know, there may also have been an issue with the newer sound core that reacted with the bundled driver, and all is well with RC2 or the release. Damn, I should stop posting about issues I've had with a build that's over two months old.)
This is stupid. I'm not saying I've tried the final product. And I am telling you the official info, not rumors. Shitsta Ultimate will be full version with all the bells and whistles and it will cost about what I mentioned. As far as what I know of the actual product, I'm just basing my opinion on the betas. That's right, surprise, they released some free test versions.
If anyone is telling me that I'm blinding bashing MS or joining a bandwagon you must be new to this world. Look around or google. No technology savvy people have praised Shitsta legitimately. Just fanboy fluff has.

yes it's true, you're blindly bashing vista. so shut the fuck up.
who of us here didn't hate xp when they were happy with 98? yes it's very different, yes it's a change. but deal with it. you're gonna be using it in the future, so bite the bullet and get used to it.
my first impressions aren't to bad. I like it. it's not all bogged down and bloated. if it runs this good on a 1ghz with 512 of pc100 ram, it's gonna run great on anything better as long as you're not a tight ass and get with the times and get a decent computer. I had a computer relative to this one over seven years ago. my laptop's specs are far beyond what vista calls for. this machine I'm running it on was pieced together from spare parts that were gonna be thrown away. spend $400 on any dell desktop and it'll run great.
what are your alternatives? linux? mac? lol
only prob I see is if people have lan cards older than 6 years (like I have) then they won't be able to get on the net to get newer drivers. I would have made lan card support on install #1 because it's the doorway to update all other drivers. there's gonna be problems with vista on release over this kind of shit.
quit being such a fanboy and keep dreaming about a ps3.
p.s. zelda on wii kicks so much fucking ass you'll burp, sneeze, and shit your pants all at the same time. I dare you to show your fanboy ignorance and say one bad thing about zelda twilight princess.

hahaha vista rates your hardware. here's what it said about mine:
processor: 1.9
ram: 1.4
graphics: 1.9
gaming graphics: 1.0
primary hard disk: 3.9
I assume it's on a scale of 1-10. I still say it's running great. I am having trouble hooking up with my xp machine over the lan though. xp seemed to make it easy, put yourselves on the same domain and you're hooked up. not that simple on vista. vista seems to be overly complicated. but I stress it runs fine on less than optimal hardware.

your non-conformist attitude is so sexay. those big emo glasses and the long hair covering your face screams "fight the man!" you can go rebel all you want. meanwhile in the real world everybody else is gonna be forced to use vista. so get a haircut, and get a real job cause rebeling died off with hippies and teenaged angst. I see nothing wrong with this software aside from initial release problems.
Only a dumbass would purchse this shit. I would never purchase this software. I would never purchase any software due to the fact that I can get it free when running windows in the first place. you don't see video game companies charging $300 for their latest game. you don't see linux charging $350 for their latest software. so why should microshaft charge this much? Companies purchase this software because they need it, and can't afford the legal ramifications of pirated software.
I'm gonna install it on my main pc if the cracks work fine.

Had to move it to a bigger HD PC, it didn't let me install on the 30gb one, wonder why?
It runs smoothly, I had no other problems. It logged in pretty good and the Avaya agent (a program we use in the call center) seemed to work fine too.

I thought the rating scales for Vista were on a scale of 1-5 for everything

<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

This is an Athlon X2 3800+ running at 2GHz, 2GB PC 5200, a 250GB WD SATA drive, and a Radeon X700 Pro, PCI-E.
Also, here is a good review:

Remeber, the RC and Betas are of Vista Ultimate, which is the most expensive version.
So you do have to pay a premium for the exact same functionality, whenever it hits stores.
Also, EAX doesn't appear to work, according to Creative.

Does [Kevin] Smith masturbate with steel wool too?
- Yes, but don’t change the subject.

From what I've seen and read, the betas and RCs of Vista Ultimate actually weren't Ultimate - they were missing the add-on packages that are supposed to ship with it when it's released in January.Remeber, the RC and Betas are of Vista Ultimate, which is the most expensive version.

I've DEFINETLY noticed a better performance and looks. I would assume all this is just one huge beta-test.Corronchilejano wrote:I've DEFINETLY noticed a better performance and looks. Vista seems to really take advantage of dual core processors.Corronchilejano wrote:I've DEFINETLY noticed a better performance and looks.
