Firefox 3
In case you folks didn't know, Firefox 3 just came out a while ago. I must say, the speed improvements are huge. All their hard work paid off a lot in this release. I didn't like their new "awesome bar", but I managed to tweak a setting to my liking.

Apart from that, and the improved performance and lower memory usage, nothing to be excited about. Still better than IE.

Just installed it.
Some extensions had to be
- removed
- replaced with similar ones (e.g. CuteMenus Crystal SVG -> CuteMenus Classic)
- needed manual searching (Tab Mix Plus)
- were no longer needed (that addon fixing the image hints at xkcd from being cut off)

Speed improvements? For me it's the exact same as always, everything has always been instant so I can't say anything is faster. The few plugins I use all work with no problem.
There are only a few noticeable differences (aside from the new butt-fugly scroll-down menu)... the format for bookmarks have changed and the bookmarks are no longer stored in the same folder as before. Not that it makes a difference, you don't need to know where the bookmarks are stored anyway considering you can just import and export them through Firefox itself.
Now I just need to wait and see if it has the same stupid memory leak Firefox 2 did.

Technically, all user configs are now stored under a small lightweight relational database (forgot which engine, sqlite likely)Cyrus wrote:There are only a few noticeable differences (aside from the new butt-fugly scroll-down menu)... the format for bookmarks have changed and the bookmarks are no longer stored in the same folder as before.

File a complaint and wait, I don't think they added a toggle... At least there isn't one in about:config.Johan_H wrote:The Image Zoom plugin now interpolates images instead of the simple pixel doubling that I want, in fact, all zoomed images seem to be interpolated now! This is a pretty huge deal for me. Does anyone know what I can do to fix it?

I used this trick to turn off the awesome bar.Agozer wrote:What new "awesome bar"? Please enlighten me. If it's an annoyance that I've yet to realize, what did you do to make it less annoying/disable it?

For some reason it logs me out when I close the browser (reddit, youtube, RHDN etc).
EDIT: Turns out it was the "Torbutton" extension...

What does SeaMonkey have over Firefox? (other than integrated mail, chat, etc..) I've failed to see much real difference.
Firefox 3:
I have a mixed opinion. It seems to take longer to start up and use just as much memory as Firefox 2. On the other hand, I have noticed several minor (Firefox 2 was already fast for me) speed ups including rendering of some pages as well as navigating back through previously cached pages. Speaking of the rendering engine, I also appreciate better standards compliance and better CSS support. As for the awesome bar. It's tough adjust to change. I think your predisposed not to like it. I'm trying to give it a chance. I think I'll get used to it. One thing you have to understand is after you use it, it will give you the correct results next time. In the end, it probably is an improvement in the evolution of browsers.
I'd give it a thumbs up if it wasn't so slow to start up and used a bit less memory.

It loads a bit faster for me (P4 1.7 GHz, 512 MB RAM, XP, avast virus scanner).
In Firefox 2 I used to load websites by their address (e.g. "bo..." for the ZSNES board, "dict..." for LEO). Now I just use the page title instead ("ZS...", "LEO") - not much difference.

The search bar isn't in the way(you can search straight from the URL bar. If you need multi-search selectability, use the sidebar).Nightcrawler wrote:Gil_Hamilton:

There's a standard find box instead of an obnoxious toolbar when you press ctrl-F(which doesn't mean there's no "find as you type" feature in Seamonkey, just that it exists alongside the old functionality instead of replacing it).
Far more extensive configuration options(for a long time, the most popular Firefox extensions were to restore options they'd removed while making a "smaller, better" browser. Now they just go to about:config).
I'm told it has a more functional sidebar, but I don't use the sidebar, and don't have Firefox installed to check.
I gather that Seamonkey has a higher standard for code submissions than Firefox does. Can't really say too much about that since I don't use Firefox regularly(I give it a try every so often, but don't keep it installed), and haven't run a beta build since Firebird. So I only know the Seamonkey side of that one(rock-solid betas, and alphas more often than not).
Firefox began life as a crippled version of Mozilla, and for all the flash with the awesomebar/find bar/search box, it's STILL just a crippled version of the Mozilla browser component.
But I'm biased. I was using Mozilla before Firefox existed, and most of the changes they made to the interface feel like changes for the sake of making changes instead of real improvements.
