mencoder.exe missing

Post by poof »

Im trying to record video, and went through the steps listed in the zmv to avi thread, placing gmplayer.exe (which for some reason is referred to as mencoder.exe) in the same folder as zsnes.exe and yet when i try to dump my recorded movie it gives "mencoder.exe is missing press space bar to continue" and nothing gets outputted. Ive tried having them both open at the same time and still nothing. Running xpSP2 and zsnes v1.51.

gmplayer.exe is the GUI version of the MPlayer.

You need to download the non-GUI version of MPlayer that contains mencoder.exe in it.

One more quick question, why is it the quality is like a 5th of what it looks like in the emulator? is there any way to get an equivalent quality?

Maybe, but considering that mencoder is mainly a command line app, it should be a tad obvious (at least trying out the other downloads would make it apparent).

That depends what dumping option you are using, and it generally depends on the game (XVid or X264 are usually the better options, the latter being better IIRC). Games like F-Zero look terrible since there's a ton of stuff on the screen being updated frequently.

You can also tweak zmovie.cfg for your own curiousity.

Usually xvid or x264 provide the best quality that zsnes can output through recording. zmovie.cfg has some options you can modify and you can easily look up switches by googling for the mencoder documentation. If your looking to upload your videos to youtube, then make sure you encode the video at 30fps (use -ofps 30) otherwise the sound will be somewhat garbled and sound funky.
