Name of some NES and Atari games
Hi,
I can't remember the names of some games I used to play quite a lot on my NES and cousin's Atari 2600. On NES, there used to be a game with lightgun where you had to shoot cowboys or something like that and another tank battle sort of game where you could also create your own stage layouts. On Atari, there was a game where a theif was trying to escape (probably running up/down a building) and you would play as a short policeman trying to catch him.
Cursing my memory at the moment.

Lightgun "Cowboy" game is probably "Wild Gunman" (since there's not a lot of lightgun games anyway it's fairly easy to figure) Last I've seen, the arcade "Vs" version (not the playchoice 10 one which is essentially identical to the NES version) which included some additional stuff, was not dumped as it is extremely rare.
Atari tank game is "Tank" I think (unless there's another similar game that let you make your stages)
edit: tha last game is "Combat" actually. "Tank" was the arcade game it was based on.
edit2: Well I don't really know the current status of "Vs Wild Gunman" so I'll shut up on this one, least I get a franpa alert...

Tank game was on the NES not Atari. It had an overhead view if that helps.Snark wrote: Atari tank game is "Tank" I think (unless there's another similar game that let you make your stages)

Sure no problem! That reminds me, a friend of mine showed me a fun flash game. It's called DINO RUN and you have to ESCAPE EXTINCTION! Sorta reminded me of an old atari game.AamirM wrote:Hi,
Thats it. Thanks dude. Damn I suck at those games now. I used to be an ace. But anywas, some great games.

I was reading this topic before my friend shot me the link so it just kind of ended up that way. I know it's doing way more stuff then a real 8-bit system of that era could do. But it always makes me curious about doing clones of games like this on the real hardware. Stuff like cave story, dino run or whatever.Johan_H wrote:As well as a whole bunch of other stuff I assume? You just said it "Sorta reminded me of an old atari game". I'm talking to Gil who implies that it would be anywhere near doable on real hardware >:Upowerspike wrote:I was reading this topic before my friend shot me the link so it just kind of ended up that way. Yeah.Johan_H wrote:As well as a whole bunch of other stuff I assume? It uses tons of colours and simultaneous sprites on screen for example.Gil_Hamilton wrote:ignoring parallax.
I've seen some impressive efforts on ye olde systems, though.
Tons of colors actually isn't very hard on the Atari side. Their hardware design was well-suited to high-color, be it the 2600's TIA, the 5200's GTIA, or the 7800's MARIA . In fact, the color-cycling Pixeljam logo at the beginning is rather similar to the 5200 rainbow logo.
Parallax is the most visible non-era feature, though there's also transparency on the wall o' death.
Sprite limits are rarely as bad as they're made out to be.
Look at the sports game of the era*. Or Defender and Robotron ports(not that the 5200's Robotron port is truly amazing, but...).
*Not the 1st-gen 2600 titles that are just named "Sport". On the 2600, you wanna look for the later RealSports line, as it demonstrates a FAR better use of the hardware. Though really, the 5200, CV, and INTV are more interesting to look at.
The 7800 could do the best DinoRun, but that's to be expected. It was the last of that era's designs, and really outclasses it's contemporary from Nintendo(remember, the NES was late to America. The 7800 was designed at the same time as the FamiCom).
Sadly, the 7800's library doesn't really show it off very well. It's essentially all 1st-generation games, and the US NES launch STARTED with 3rd-gen titles.
Ninja Golf is still awesome, though.
atari 8-bit computers FTW. grew up on an a400, which was replaced by a 130XE.Gil_Hamilton wrote:Yeah.Johan_H wrote:As well as a whole bunch of other stuff I assume? It uses tons of colours and simultaneous sprites on screen for example.Gil_Hamilton wrote:ignoring parallax.
