change background color

does anyone know where abouts the code is in the zsnes source for the background color for the lowest layer is because id like to change it so that i can extract the sprites with black outlines more easily.

Most of the DOS port's video modes are 8-bit ... so you get the SNES palette.

For only a few sprites you could use a savestate tool.
