1) Use TCP.
2) Make sure both sides are not using a router/firewall (even the built-in XP firewall can be harmful.. if you are using a router.. makes sure to allow the default TCP port ZSNES uses to go through. Worst case scenario is to set yourself outside of the DMZ
3) Make sure you know what IP you are in. Any IP in the range of 192.168.x.x is given to you by your router. Make sure you are using the ACTUAL ip of your connection. There are tools for such purpose.. there is a sticky/thread that you may want to look at in reading further.

my buddy is only on a dial-up connection running off aol and windows xp. i am on a cable connection with XP which i set up my router to port forward my port 7845 and using tcp instead of udp. im not wiz at computers, but my buddy is an idiot im guessing its something at his end. probly didnt take down his firewall or something.
is there anything special when im trying to play with someone on a dial-up connection?

If you're behind a router, ignore the IP address that ZSNES gives you. Go to www.ipchicken.com and give your buddy the address that it reports there. As long as you're hosting and using TCP, the client computer shouldn't need to forward anything, but firewall software may still need to be configured to traffic in and out on port 7845.
Even if you do get it to work, you probably won't be able to play much of anything because of the AOL. It's going to be extremely laggy and will probably desynch a lot. Don't expect to play Street Fighter II or anything else that requires split-second timing.
If you must do it though, make sure you (on the cable modem) are the server and you have the port forwarded. UDP will generally speed things up, but probably will not work with AOHell.
