RetroUSB Kit Doesn't Work!!!

Gamepad acting up? Keyboard not responding properly? Can't get that other user to work? Read and post about it here.

RetroUSB Kit Doesn't Work!!!

Post by wauger »

Hi All,
First post on the forum, so go easy on me :-)

Recently I purchased two mock SNES controllers on eBay for cheap. Not sure who the manufacturer is but here is a picture:

Then I purchased two DIY RetroUSB kits for the controllers and made the soldering connections myself. Info at http://www.retrousb.com/kits.html

You guess it, they dont work. Neither of them work with ZSNES emulator that I am using. Crazy thing is that the computer (WinXP) recognizes the controllers immediately and loads them into the operating system as Human Interface Devices, just like a mouse, keyboard or joystick.

I have no idea how to configure ZSNES to get it to recognize the controllers at all. It just defaults to the keyboard as an input device.

Now its possible that either (1) My soldering didn't cut it or (2) the cheap controllers sucked in the first place.

Just wondering if there is something obvious that I missing here? Appreciate the help.

You need to map the buttons to the controller, otherwise ZSNES doesn't know what to do with your controller and just defaults to the default keyboard settings.

Go to input on the config menu.
Click the "set keys" button.
Press buttons on controller #1 as prompted.
Click on the #2 tab and repeat with controller #2.

AntoineWG et al,
Thanks for the tip again. I tried this last night and got a little farther. I went to Input --> Set Keys and pushed the keys on the my homemade USB SNES controller. The 'A' and 'B' buttons were recognized. However most of the controller functions were not recognized: Up, Down, Left, Right, X, Y.

I assume that this is due to either my controller and/or my soldering job.

Can you confirm? Maybe I am missing something else? :?

There's either somthing wrong with the controller or adaptor, or it could just need to be calibrated. Go to the control panel and calibrate it in the game controller dialog and see where that gets you.

Which control panel do you mean? Windows Control Panel or the ZSNES Control Panel?

You probably want Windows to recognize it as a generic usb joystick with 12 buttons. I seem to remember being able to mess around with the drivers to manage that sort of magic when the drivers on my old PSJoy stopped working correctly in service pack 2.
