Name that game (old PC)

Post by Snark »

This one should not be very to find as I believe it was pretty well known at the time, but I'll be damn if I can find it.

It's basically a Chess-like game. Well. basically it looked and played like Chess but with one major difference: The game would go into a one-on-one real time "battle mode" where in Chess you would simply "capture" the piece, favoring both traditional Chess-like strategy and Shmups-like skills.

Of course, different pieces had different values, so even a skilled player could hardly win a "pawn" vs "queen" equivalent matchup.

The game probably was release during the early-mid eighties...Any ideas?

Archon.
Was also ported to the NES. Probably some other systems too.

Thats it. Thanks

edit: (wrong link) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archon_%28computer_game%29

I was wrong concerning the original system. It was first developped on the Atari 8-bit not the PC/X86s (but later ported to PCs among others)

It was later remade for DOS as Archon Ultra.

I remembers playing battle chess in highschool on the computer with some classmates. That was pretty fun, I'm surprised the game took less than an hour.
