Cannot set resolution to 512x384x8B on ThinkPad 600 in DOS

Post by ¿°¿ »

If I try to set the video resolution to 512x384x8B in DOS, the emulator crashes, freezes the computer (and the drive busy light stays on) and gives an error. This happens on any game, or even when no game is loaded. The error is, with no game loaded:

I don't think there's any typos, I checked it twice, but if something doesn't make sense, ask me and I'll find out.

If you don't have a VESA2 compliant video card, it's probably not going to work...

I don't think it's the graphics card

Post by ¿°¿ »

It works with all the other VESA2 modes. 512x384x8B is the ONLY one it doesn't work with.

I'm not too familar with the resolutions VESA2 supports...

It could just be that this resolution just doesn't work on your system.

It does work

Post by ¿°¿ »

Another thing I should have said at the start: It works fine on this resolution, using the DOS version under Windows 98.

I personally think this issue is just specific to you.. unless some other DOS user can verify your claim.

Probably your Video BIOS doesn't support this VBE mode. In DOS you either need the Video BIOS to support it or a 3rd party VBE tsr such as Scitech Display Doctor (now free for download from their ftp site although it hasn't been updated in a few years for new hardware) or univbe. In Windows DOS the card's Windows display driver will be handling the VBE mode (no VBE BIOS support required unless you shutdown to MSDOS mode in which case it probably doesn't work there either).

Thanks

I think I'll try the Video Doctor, and maybe contact IBM about it.

Scitech Display Doctor generally helps older video cards... so you may be fortunate...

However, IBM will most likely do nothing to update older technology (there could be a video BIOS update or a VESA BIOS TSR to use, but whatever I guess).

I think it'll help

It will probably help, then. My laptop will be 8 years old in may. Still has all the stickers, too!
