Haha, I used to be like you. I said "$600 PS3?, that's not going to happen. It will be maximum $400". Yeah, now look what happened.
I was with you, but even after hearing the pricetag I'm still confident it will be worth it.

Well not when the license has to be paid once per month or once per year. Ever heard o pay as you go? Seems Microshit wanted to use this "feature" on it's OS.
I heard rumors of that being in Vista, come to think of it.

If this ends up being true, I think I'll pretty much go Linux.

That also sounds like a viable solution, it's got at least three more years of support left on the consumer level, and we haven't even seen SP3 for XP yet.

I read that Microsoft delayed the SP3 until 2007. So more waiting?

Eh, well, most corporations decided to "just stick with 2k since it is more than adequate." 2k is the most commonly used Windows still.

Microsoft doesn't want that to repeat. Not upgrading OSes = no money.

So expect for them to do some seriously underhanded voodoo to inspire you to switch to Vista.

The same has happened with 2000 to some extent already. At work, they all run 2000, yet they all have PowerToys and many other "XP-only" things installed. Look for it to become worse with Vista.

And XP isn't going to hold up with all the new features in the world. There will be a day when XP will be as useless as 98 is now... Are you willing to bet that Microsoft will have gotten their act together by then?

THIS is why I am becoming versed in Linux now; unlike XP, it will be supported and updated far into the future.

The average linux distribution only supports a particular version for at most 3 years. Of course, Linux has evolved greatly in the past 3 years, which Windows has not. That being said, once the computer nerd group completely changes over to Unix-like operating systems everyone else will follow.

But you can always upgrade to a later version. Unlike Vista, Linux is less likely to require an state-of-art computer to run it when a version is released. It is also not going to have a completely DRMed backend. Or try and fuck you into buying some expensive add-on or upgrade to "get full functionality." And Gentoo never needs to be "updated."

Please, though, remember that most of the Vista information isn't set in stone. While I am looking for Vista to suck, I am not going to make my final decision about that till it comes out.

I, however, feel that I am prepared whether or not Vista sucks. I am versed enough in Linux to loose Windows for everything but gaming, and can switch to Vista if I want to.

Cool you're verse enough to know windows does more than games right?

Alot of businesess run Office, Exchange, and tablets pcs. Guess what, those software aren't on linux. Unless you're a construction worker or something, I'm betting you'll be using Windows in one form or another in your servicing career.

This new vista is more than cosmetic from what I've been reading. It's core was design for multiple platforms in mind, such as those new mini tablets orgami, pda/cell phones, and servers.

Also from the looks of features, look like this windows is coming closer to Apple's user friendless and unix security.

As long as MS isn't too strict on the lincensing fee/requirement, I'll be more than happy to switch over.

Security wise. Good. User friendlyness...BAD! I already find windows to be annoyingly user friendly. Oh well, I'll just have to spend an hour shutting shit off again

Yeah, I haven't switched from 2k becuase I find most of XP's additions really annoying.

Security-wise, wait for 3 months after its released before making ANY judgements in regards to that. It could very well be really secure. Or it could be like XP: touted as secure by Microsoft, but full of holes. Who knows.

The new core design is coming at a massive performance price. Most of the OS is runnig off .NET so that it is multiplatform compliant, which of course means that your PDA/tablet/cell phone is going to have to be 1Ghz-plus to able to keep up with current systems. .NET is ssllooww.

I'll admit that I will need to use Vista at work, but I certainly am not taking it home with me. Having to deal with OO's (many) problems will likely be worth the effort when the alternative is having to pay exhuberent prices for software, hardware, or DRM shit. OO will happily open 95% of Office's shit, and I have handed dozens of assignments written in OO to my professors at college with no problems.

Yes, but it is quite obvious that we are talking about it from a personal everyday use context.
anime wrote: Alot of businesess run Office, Exchange, and tablets pcs. Guess what, those software aren't on linux.
There are many of Offimatic (sp? is it even the correct word?) equivalents for Linux, and most of them support MS Office documents. Being a very extensive user of office programs in many of its levels, I can say you the only thing the regular user will miss in an open source equivalent would be the fonts installed and clipart.

Tablet pcs can be supported, but I can agree there are not many good programs that can use them properly.

What's so special about Exchange server? It is far from unique, for all I know.

No shit sherlock, but that doesn't mean he has to use windows at home, does it?

This is far from new, but if you are impressed by that, good for you.

Coming closer is always being one step behind.

Funny to say, I went into a congress of sorts a month ago, there was this Vista conference and it was funny to see how much the exposer avoided addressing security at such OS.

Their OS prices have always been a pain in the ass. Terminal Server licensing fees have always been a pain in the ass. Many other figures in their products have always been a pian in the ass. Why shouldn't this be like this?

But I made it up! Fuck you kevman!

As a matter for fact, ofimatica does 'exist' on spanish, hence my vague assumption.

It is said that installing vista makes installing linux a pain in the ass due to the drm crap, or something like that.

You can do that on a regular x86, if you get a hacked image of macosx

As sweet as most people bash it just for the price. There are many rich people on USA alone.

Bashing something for it's price is a very good reason.

Sony was saying from the beginning that they every house wasn't going to be able to afford one, so it's odd we all reacted to the price announcement the way we did.
