I noticed that when a ZMV recording begins to get long (around 1 to 2 hours), the state saving really begins to bog down (it takes a full one to two seconds -- 2 seconds after 6 to 8 hours -- on my computer). I also noticed that when recording, state saving via a hotkey (in my case, R2 on a PS2 controller) is continuous, meaning it saves the state EVERY FRAME the button is held. In normal state saving, it only saves once while the button is held.
My guess is that these save states are saved within the zmv, so it has to rewrite the entire file every time it saves. At least, I'd like to THINK that's why it takes so long, but I noticed that movies have their own .zs? files, so I guess that's not the reason. I'm sure the fact that it's trying to save every frame doesn't help, either.
ZMV Scalability...

Saving a state during movie record gzips and stores the entire movie file in a special container.
The longer and complex the movie, the longer it takes to store it all. This is not subject to change.
Joypad keys as shortcut have a rapidfire effect in movies (and on some other occasions, like key combos). You can use the keyboard for a one-shot effect. We're aware that it's an issue to several users, and we'll eventually add an option to make all joypad input one-shot in the future.
