Console To PC Controller Adapters - Smart Joy or build?

I would like to build some sort of adapter to plug in SNES controllers to my PC like the ones here but there's a problem. Those use parallel ports, which are now becoming outdated. Is there any way to build something like that for USB?

I noticed on Lik-Sang.com the super SmartJoy adapter and SNES controller extension cable. Do the Smart Joys work well with multiple SNES controllers and a extensions? It seems to me with all that wiring there would be lag. If there is lag I would rather build something out of the female ends of the extension cables to create an adapter for USB. Also the SmartJoy seems kind of large and I would like to conserve space for traveling (Gradius III on a 5 hour airplane trip YES!!!)

first of all, yes, you can make a usb adaptor for a snes controller. I can't give you an exact link, but I have come across multiple sites with instructions. The Smartjoy is also great, i own one and I haven't had any lag so far. But it ended up costing me around $40 canadian. So it all comes down to what you want to do. I have heard of the SmartJoy not working on some occasions. It's not OVERLY large, and is actually quite light, the cords might end up getting a little tangly because of the laptop being in your lap and all

I haven't seen any websites telling how to build a USB adapter but I'll keep looking. sewercake, do you have any problems with button combinations, a review somewhere said it won't register some combos. And do you have any problems with it registering multiple button presses when you only pressed it once?

Gentlegamer, thanks I've never seen that website before. I'd prefer not to bust my wallet getting $32 controllers but if I can't find a Smartjoy cheaper than that I'll do it. Could the conversion kits be used to make an adapter or are they strictly for converting to USB?

As far as I know, the kits are for converting console gamepads to USB for use with a home computer.

For "authentic" game-play via emulation, I think the price is very reasonable.

I built my own SNES-to-Parallel adapter (http://www.tolaris.com/snes-to-parallel/) and it works great in windows using PPJoy (http://www.geocities.com/deonvdw/PPJoy.htm). I'm still working on getting it to work in Linux but that's mostly me being a recent convert.

It's extremely easy to build. I had absolutely no experience in this sort of thing before and it only took me a few hours to complete, which included testing cables for continuity and such. All you need is a cable with a male parallel end and you're set. And of course a soldering iron, solder, and a local Radio Shack.

Well, I'd say build if you want to learn something new (depends on past experience)

or buy if you've had no experience and just want to use an snes control pad.

I'm not sure which method has the least amount of lag though, I'm stuck with using a keyboad at the moment, I plan to build. Anyone up for answering that question though?

well my main goal is to get 4 (four) simultaniously working SNES controllers on one usb port... maybe 2. i dont want any lag.
