Running an FTP server.
So yeah, I have a Linksys router, and am trying to run an FTP server. I have learned that this is futile because of the router itself. Does anyone know of a good router possibly even wireless that forwards ftp commands through PASV mode?

Port 21 forawrds fine. Its the data connection that the router wont forward.AntoineWG wrote:Why not just forward port 21? You won't be able to accept any incoming connections without it.
I even upgraded the router's firmware to the latest, still nothing. I was planning on picking up a new router anyways due to mine being outdated, and most of my wireless belongings needing G now.
it seems you're not asking for advice, but I'm gonna shove it down your throat anyways:
1. make sure your computer always has the same lan ip address. either set the computer up for dhcp, and router for ip address assigning via mac address, or set your computer to tell the router what static ip address you want to have.
2. enable dmz to your computer (opens all ports to you) if this works, then you know you got the router config'd wrong.
3. check your gay ftp software to see if there's a range of ports it uses for passive mode, and open that range in your router.
4. any router nowadays will work with ftp (wireless or not.) I fricken did it like 7 years ago no problems.
5. lick my nutties cause I just saved you from buying a new router which you would have had the same problems with because.
6. this is clearly user error.
7. rtfm
8. the end

It most definately is user error. Though some weirdness, it never worked with DMZ. After 72 hours of fighting with it I got the FTP server running. But, I still need a new router now as mine tends to lcok up about every 30-40 minutes and needs a reset.phOnYmIkE wrote:it seems you're not asking for advice, but I'm gonna shove it down your throat anyways:

To make an FTP server work properly on a LAN via NAT, the following must all be true:
1) FTP server must have TCP ports 20 and 21 forwarded to it
2) FTP server must be listening on its LAN address that has the forwarded ports
3) FTP server must be masquerading as the outside IP
4) FTP server must have a range of upper ports forwarded to it for passive connections
5) FTP server must have those upper ports forwarded to it
6) FTP server must have those upper ports properly defined
If all the above are true, it will work flawlessly
If any of the above are false, it will be broken in one fashion or another

I dont need a web interface, but what you offer sounds a little outside of my scope. All I needed was a quick and dirty wat to transfer files to and from my computer at home. But anyway thanks for the info. Almost all was true except for #3. Dont know how I missed it.soulmata wrote:wait no it won't because you probably suck and need a web interface

Anyway replaced the router (old one ended up stalling all traffic after about 20 to 30 minutes) and sailing smoothly now.
