Linux
How the hell do you install ZSNES on linux. I don't use the command line. I use Mandriva. I know nothing of linux commands. Is there a way to install it like you do on windows?

Linux Command Line
What would be a good and user friendly help tutorial on learning it?

I dunno, it's not as hard as you imagine... a quick google wouldn't hurt if you need to. In most cases though, most install instructions are explicit in telling you what to type... as least the ZSNES install instructions are fairly explicit.

Linux Installations
Are all Linux programs installed this way? I mean isn't there anything automated like in Windows?
Re: Linux Installations
There are package managers. At least Ubuntu does have those. All things considered though, knowing the Linux command-line is pretty much mandatory.sargonious wrote:Are all Linux programs installed this way? I mean isn't there anything automated like in Windows?

Ubuntu
I ordered ubuntu because the iso wasn't burning properly. I used Nero but... back to Linux. I'm currently using Mandriva. It is the only one so far to complete the installation. FREEBSD and PCBSD didn't work on my system.

If Mandriva is based on Red Hat, shouldn't it use something like Yum (the Red Hat port of apt)?
Also, if you are going to learn Linux, you should know right now that you are going to have to use the command line. There are plenty of resources out there, so just google away.

Anything *buntu has a package manager. (Synaptic for ubuntu and adept for kubuntu, and you can also use apt)
Other distros with a package manager:
Debian (apt)
PCLinuxOS (Synaptic)
Free/LinSpire (CNR and apt)
Gentoo (emerge)
RedHat/Fedora
Slackware (not by default, but you can install emerde and use emerge as if you were in Gentoo)
and to compile ZSNES...
cd to the src directory
./autogen.sh
make
sudo make install (sudo isn't needed if you're already root, but minimal dependence on root is good.)
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

I don't know if you read my FreeDOS post...
That's a mess too right now. haha I miss Windows. Lousy Microsoft bastards. Why is it so goddamn expensive? I hope Linux gets easier. For now I'll do some googling.

You're an antogonist...
Anyways... I also have a small slice of my hard drive partitioned to FreeDOS 1.0 which is running for other emulators such as Genecyst, Nesticle, both versions x.xx which are perfect, Callus 0.42 running smoothly... It's only ZSNES that's not functioning properly under FreeDOS. I have CWSDPMI running but it loads ZSNES yet once you load a ROM it freezes the whole system and I have to reboot. They worked fine under Windows.

My current guess is that you may not be allocating enough memory for ZSNES. You need at approximately 32MB to load virtually any ROM in the DOS port. On the other hand, my other guess is that you're using 1.42 and there are some MMX related bugs... you hadn't disabled the MMX support option.

Memory Issues
I haven't tried disabling MMX support. That might do it. I'm running the latest version. I just downloaded it about two days ago after downloading the FreeDOS distrib. I remember how to use DOS (from expert back in the day to a normy nowadays), Linux I'm still learning.

sargonious, you may want to try the DOS WIPs, if disabling MMX support doesn't help / you don't want to disable MMX support.
ok, i got linux for once
is there any pre requisits for zsnes? as in any packages i must install first in order to install linux?

zsnes mandriva install
sargonious
I have Mandriva Linux on this computer.
Add the PLF repository to the Mandriva package manager. It's an absolute neccesity for using Linux. PLF also has Mplayer and all the semi legal codecs for playing DVDs, WMV, AVI etc.
Log in a terminal as root and enter....
urpmi.addmedia plf-free ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Lin ... ree/2006.0 with hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree ftp://ftp.free.fr/pub/Distributions_Lin ... ree/2006.0 with hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia free ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mand ... 007.0/i586
urpmi.update
Start the mandriva add/remove software program do a search for zsnes.
Select it and click install.
I wish they would include these repository settings as default in Mandriva. Everyone who uses linux needs a codec or emulator sometime.
