Donkey Kong Country Sunset Problem In WIPs

Post by Tropican8 »

I've mentioned this on IRC but I thought I'd make a post.

In the most recent Win32 WIP builds and several past ones, certain scene changes in some games seem to cause a temporary video slowdown. When I enable the FPS counter, everything is a perfect 60fps despite this slowdown.

This problem does not occur for me in 1.42, only in WIP builds and SVN builds.

The most reproducable and noticeable example of the issue is the sunset in the first level of Donkey Kong Country.

Here's my system/version info:

Donkey Kong Country Rom with a valid CRC32 of 762AF827
ZSNES Oct. 12 WIP as well as any builds done from SVN, brand new conffile used, occurs with or without autoframerate.

AMD Athlon 4200+ X2 Windsor
2GB PC2-4200 (DDR2 533Mhz)
SATA-150 250GB 7200RPM HDD
DVD+-RW DL 16x LightScribe
NVidia GeForce 6150 LE
Realtek/Intel HD Audio
Windows XP MCE 2005 SP2
(no spyware, viri, etc., no notable background tasks)

Do you have the NTSC or PAL version of DKC? The slowdown doesn't happen on my system with the PAL version.

What resolution are you using? (It may matter) I use 768x672 ODR W with HQ2X.

AMD Athlon XP 2200+
512MB DDR RAM (don't remember what speed)
GeForce FX5700LE (don't know RAM/speed)
Sound Blaster PCI 512 (EMU10K1 core)
Gentoo Linux 2006.0

The FPS counter is at 60, so I don't think it's a system speed issue.

This is very likely a timing issue. Wait for the new core.. there is no ETA though.

I get similar slowdowns in Super Mario World when there's a lot of stuff onscreen. Could this be related?

Kirby's Superstar Deluxe has such slowdowns, too. Interestingly, the music stays normal in both games.

Kirby Superstar has the SA-1 chip, which won't be tweaked in quite a while, so...be patient.
