I don't get any Windows XP sounds

Place to talk about all that new hardware and decaying software you have.

I don't get any Windows XP sounds

Post by snkcube »

Today, my Windows XP sounds aren't working anymore, such as the start up and shut down sound. The only thing that seemed to mess it up was when I had to end task the Windows Explorer, since it crashed on me. After that, my problem appeared. When I go to the "Sounds and Audio Devices" settings, the play button under the "Sound" tab are grayed out. However, when I play videos or songs, I do get sound. I tried re-installing using the latest drivers and that didn't do anything. I also did a System Restore and that didn't work too. So here I'am, needing some help.

Onboard sound: C-Media Wave Device

Exact same problem as this person.

in the sound settings did you choose a sound for an action? as if no sound is set the play button will obviosly be greyed out.

I think I've heard of the issue before.. but I don't know what causes it. Make sure the hardware acceleration slider for your device is set to emulated first, and back to full acceleration. It "might" work.

@franpa: Yes, the sounds are selected for those actions. I didn't change any of the sounds at all.

@Deathlike2: Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work.

Sounds like XP might be fucked up...

The only thing I can think of is try to check if the sound card's service is enabled... Control Panel->Adminstrative Tools->Services...

Where did my Sounds go?
Restore System Sound: This generally happens when the Windows Audio Service does not stay started. This edit resolves the issue.

Franpa:

1. Snkcube had his problem resolved, therefore IMO this should be closed.
2. That is too small of a screenshot, I can hardly read it
and 3. try cleaning your cookies.
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?
NSRT here.
