Anyway to edit a ROM or a setting through ZSNES to stop the background music playing? I swear I remember a Game Genie code where it did that...dunno what game though.

Depends on the game. Some games assign certain sound channels to the music; channels can be disabled with some keys.

See the GUI configuration or the docs for the key assignment.
