Well it was fast as hell while it lasted, too bad Rambus RAM never really stood a chance considering the price difference between it and standard types RAM. The only thing these days which uses it is the PS3.alexz721 wrote:My computer only takes RDRAM, hence I'm screwed until I replace the motherboard.
As for Vista, screw it, I'll switch when I'm forced to.

I may try to install Beryl today on my Ubuntu system (laptop is using a Radeon Mobility x1300). Any tips?Echoecho wrote:Depends what you mean by "bad". To me something that has that many licensing limitations, and which has no real advantage in using, is bad. Speaking of Aero, I just installed the Beryl manager on a linux system, and it could use some polishing yet, but while using it I think 'Aero who?' Another incentive to want Vista Ultimate edition flushed down the toilet as far as I'm concerned..

Actually, this one's good... well, if your an adminNeo Kaiser wrote:THIS is what worries me the most!

It works like butta, altough there are some weird issues with programs not native to Vista (such as Win95 programs). Most of them don't run.
Speaking of not running, zsnes doesn´t run for me in here... anyone else tested it?

Tried ZSNES in pre-beta 2 builds, the official beta 2 build, as well as (I believe so anyway) RC1
ZSNES worked fine in all three builds
however anti-vir didn't
EDIT: Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that what's holding me back from Vista would also be:
* DAEMON Tools
* Alcohol 120
* Anti-Vir

IIRC, ZSNES does work in Vista. You probably want to compile ZSNES via Zget for better compatibility.Corronchilejano wrote:Actually, this one's good... well, if your an adminNeo Kaiser wrote:THIS is what worries me the most!![]()

That may be more because of ATI than Beryl. I'm using an nvidia. The only times I've had Beryl crash on me so far is when doing something like trying to run fullscreen zsnes. Even when it doesn't crash, it's a better idea to turn it off when running fullscreen because it screws up vsync while running. It can easily be switched off with the tasktray icon though. Aero doesn't have half the stuff Beryl does, so all it wins is bloat and higher system requirements.

That may be true. I've got it running pretty well now, except that I can't suspend the laptop, which is kind of a major issue. Also, mplayer spawns off screen somewhere in magic land where I can't see it. Otherwise, it's fucking sweet.Echoecho wrote:That may be more because of ATI than Beryl. I'm using an nvidia. more or less, its like the kdesu program for *nix
(it gives you temporary admin access, long enough to run the particular program, nothing more)

XGL / Beryl is way more effect-whizzly than anything out there period, but that's not necessarily a good thing / more beautiful / what you want. It's especially good if you want to make your own experimental UI or something (there are plenty of ideas nobody's really worked with yet... particle effects and shattering windows would be pretty sw33t). I will say that the compositing, AIGLX, etc. are what X should have had a long time ago, except that XFree86 kind of held things back for a while, something most Linux guys aren't too proud of. Also, getting graphics drivers working can be a royal pain, as usual. I'm just good at it, but it seems to be hard for a lot of people.kode54 wrote:But really, I am just seeing what I want to see. Next week, I'll throw the whole thing out to install my own hackintosh, because that can probably run my favorite irreplaceable Windows-only software right on the system desktop with Parallels. Or maybe I'll switch to Linux after all, because I hear XGL / Beryl is way prettier than anything out there. If I could just tear myself away from this complete setup that I started two months ago that's finally worn in to my needs.
Maybe I'll try FeebySD 6.x instead next time I'm bored and have the drive space to kill. All of the Open Sauce, significantly less of teh gays.
FreeBSD? The BRPXQZME disapproves, but from his contacts he has heard that when they say that the "CURRENT" branch is unstable, they really mean it. So don't make that common mistake, use 5.x or 6.x.
(Me? I'm totally happy with my crappy little lowest-spec-possible MacBook, and there will be no Vista on it, ever, end of story. I have XP solely for Ragnarok Online.)

If you are going to Linux, I recommend quitting Windows cold turkey. It really forces you to learn the new system. After a couple of months, you realize that there are many things in Linux that cannot be done in Windows (like the easy of installing programs, better file management, etc) that you can't live without.
<pagefault> i'd break up with my wife if she said FF8 was awesome
Hey if you're some lamer who makes a buck out of other people's misfortune (Windows users), by all means stick with it for your work - it goes without saying, no need to be a snooty teenoid about it. By all means, be a corporate prison bitch, we all gotta eat. But that's hardly what was argued here at the start. Fanboys don't want Vista to do their work, and that is the majority behind the hype behind vista. If you don't agree with this d'nile is not just a river in Egypt.
btw, Beryl works on KDE.

I would love to start learning Linux eventually, but I've never been able to get the Internet to work on it. I don't want to have to keep booting back into Windows just so that I can look up tutorials about Linux on the Internet. I think it's my drivers.badinsults wrote:If you are going to Linux, I recommend quitting Windows cold turkey. It really forces you to learn the new system.
