Dragon Quest IX To Be a Nintendo DS EXCLUSIVE.

the math says its +10 bazzilion to Square-Enix. People seem to forget who owns the Final Fantasy franchise.fanboy idiot wrote:6. DQ series on PS2 was a big selling point for the system in Japan. Now PS3 won't have that exclusivity and Nintendo continues Japan domination with DS.
So in my opinion it's -100 points to Sony (which is already in trouble), and +50 points to DS (which is already selling like crazy).

I'm sure it will be a money maker, but on the other hand, I think it's a dumb idea for a major chapter in a major RPG series.
It'll make for a sub par game. Dragon Quest VIII was a masterpiece. The DS can never hope to achieve what was done on the PS2.

The graphics for that DQ Joker game are supposed to be some of the best ever seen on the DS. Very similar to DQVIII.Nightcrawler wrote:I'm sure it will be a money maker, but on the other hand, I think it's a dumb idea for a major chapter in a major RPG series.

DQ is a game with animeish graphics, it doens't make sense to invest the amount of resources into making it a PS3/360 game, as neither would actuallt add anything more to cel-shadded graphics than what last gen-hardware did.
Leave the photo-realistic breasts to the FF series.

the ds can never hope to have a captivating and deep storyline? the ds can never hope to have a fun, well thought out battle system? or is it that the ds is incapable of creating a protagonist that people can relate to?Nightcrawler wrote:I'm sure it will be a money maker, but on the other hand, I think it's a dumb idea for a major chapter in a major RPG series.

Well, it does have two screens for that long spiky hair. And also huge swords, the DS is more than capable to have RPGs.sweener2001 wrote:the ds can never hope to have a captivating and deep storyline? the ds can never hope to have a fun, well thought out battle system? or is it that the ds is incapable of creating a protagonist that people can relate to?Nightcrawler wrote:I'm sure it will be a money maker, but on the other hand, I think it's a dumb idea for a major chapter in a major RPG series.

it also doesn't have 4 gigabytes of space for FMVs. I mean come on what a piece of crap, I want my RPGs to have 2-6 hours (or more!) of FMVssweener2001 wrote:but now i'm afraid that the ds lacks the processor power to draw me into a world where i'll get lost in the story. i think it might be lacking the megahurtz to create a great atmosphere.

Even though Chrono Trigger was fucking amazing when it came out, it wouldn't be as amazing if it were released today after all of the kickass PS2 RPG's that I played. Game systems evolve, and the games should evolve with them. After playing Dragon Quest 8 on PS2, I don't want to play a *new* Dragon Quest game that is inferior to 8 in any way shape or form - it doesn't make any sense. Don't you want your games to get better? Now obviously I'm not claiming graphics are going to do this - but come on, there is just no way a DS RPG is going to grab me like a console RPG can - and you play RPG's for the story. RPG's these days are all about presentation. Why would I not want a developer to use all the shiny tools at their disposal these days?blackmyst wrote:Surely it's common knowledge that there aren't any games on any system before the PS2 generation that had any atmosphere whatsoever.

Fuck. I knew I forgot something. Voice-overs are essential. I mean, who the hell wants to read a bunch of text?kode54 wrote:Holy crap, without the FMVs and high quality voice overs, what else is there? I sure as heck don't know, as I never made it far enough to to see if there was any actual gameplay.

I loved it - I also played it like 8 years ago, and are you seriouisly comparing the plot of something like Dragon Quest 8 to Link's Awakening? The game had like 50 lines of text.blackmyst wrote:I'll ask you too: what did you think of Link's Awakening?

How can you now? This is the first major RPG that has come to the DS. FFIII is a remake of a very early game that had a not too complex job system and some character developement tacked on. DQIX is one of the biggest titles that will EVER be released for a handheld. It is sure to raise the bar. It will be made from the ground up and will be the lastest installment of a long running series, not just some spin-off title with an entirely different system and a crippled storyline.casualsax3 wrote:Now obviously I'm not claiming graphics are going to do this - but come on, there is just no way a DS RPG is going to grab me like a console RPG can - and you play RPG's for the story.

It will end up being a great game for the DS, but there is no fucking way that you can tell me it's possible to create a superior RPG experience on a handheld.
I'd rather have it on a console that I can play on my TV at home that's hooked up to my nice stereo, so I can enjoy the awesome music that a fucking console can offer.

Er, I think you sorta missed what I meant there. I compared DQIX to LA in the way that they're both installments in a major series that got "demoted" to a technically much inferior system (4 shades of gray? hah). Yet LA turned out great, better in many ways than its predecessor. Don't see why this can't happen with DQIX.casualsax3 wrote:I loved it - I also played it like 8 years ago, and are you seriouisly comparing the plot of something like Dragon Quest 8 to Link's Awakening? I'd rather have it on a portable console that I can play ANYWHERE I WANT. Also, I can pirate it easily as well.casualsax3 wrote:It will end up being a great game for the DS, but there is no fucking way that you can tell me it's possible to create a superior RPG experience on a handheld.
