My kitty died yesterday

Post by Mark57Raider »

It was then when I entered the bedroom after work, I saw white puss on the floor where it had been ejaculated from his head. I watched in horror as Atticus was squealing in pain and flailing around like a fish out of the water. His eyes agape, and what's worse about this scenario is that I had it since childbirth. It kept yelping in pain as he was having a seizure. It was so horrofying to watch. My mom covered it with a plastic bag over his head to suppress his suffering, and slowly but surely it stopped breathing and she buried it the following day.

Wow that's fucked up. I am really sorry to hear that, pets are never easy to lose, especially in such an awful way.

Sorry man. Even worse than seeing your pet dead is watching him die. Must`ve been a bitch.

Heh. I watched my rabbit die, years ago. We'd had it for 13 years. It had pneumonia, and it died of suffocation while we were at the vet's.

Did you know rabbits can scream?

Neither did I.

That really sucks man, sorry. I hope nothing like that happens to my cat. She's getting old now, like 14. She already had arthritis which we're are treating with medication so she's almost good as new.

Reminds me of a few years ago, right before Christmas, when we had to put my dog down. We had him for 14 years, and he was about 2 when we adopted him, so he had a real good run. He had this huge spongy tumor on his hip that imobilized his right leg and it was literally sucking the life out of him. Towards the end, he couldn't walk very well any more. My brother and I went with to the vet to comfort him, right up to the final moments. I cried the whole way to the place where we had him cremated.

16 years old? A dog I once had was older than I was by a couple of years. This dog was taken care of HORRIBLY by it's previous owner who was an old lady. She didn't know that dogs can't just eat anything humans can and this dog (a shi-tzu) had grown up on human food. It was almost completely blind, most of it's fur had fallen out, it could barely walk, and had random fat diposites in it's body.

After the dog came into the care of my family I believe it was 22 years old at that point, near the end of it's life it's fur had grown back, it's vision was improved and had surgery for the random deposites of fat in it's body. It died at about 27 years of age which is simply amazing for a dog which was raised on foods which were killing it. I guess that does prove that shi-tzus are the longest living dogs in the world. I have one now that is 10 years old, it looks much the same as it did when it was 2 years old.

And as for mark's cat, sorry to hear that. It must be horrible to watch something you love die.

Its still just a cat. I have trouble understanding the depth of a bond one can form with a dumb animal. I mean, its sad and all, I'm sorry to hear it, but its really not a big deal in the long run.

My friend had his cat die, so he skipped an important presentation he had to make and spent two days in bed. He ultimitely got a C in that class becuase of a cat.

My grandmother died and I only missed a day or two of school, and nothing important. (And you should see how my Grandfather took it. He walked in to his house and... Did you know that ambulances won't take the already dead? You have to call an undertaker).
He then had the balls to try and equate the two when I yelled at him for screwing his grades over. Pisses me off thinking about it.

Hell, another friend's MOTHER died and he handled it better.

Its just a cat. I hate cats.

but yeah, it's just an animal

I still miss my dog, even though he died years ago
I never missed school or anything when it happened however

then again, I'm not really the sensitive type

Sure they're not as important as other humans, but it doesn't mean people are not affected by them at all.

IMO there's a gradient from animal to human, not a fine line. Darwin's theory goes for the mind as well...

The fact that they can't talk or endeavour in regular human social relationships doesn't "rule out" the possibilty or making an affectional bond to them. Talkin and having sex are not the only forms to express affection and love towards another mammal.

More often than not, at least in the case of dogs, a pet will like/love/whatever you unconditionally, and will even attempt to protect you to death. If the only thing you can say about them is that they are just dumb animals, it is clear you haven't really taken proper care of one.

I will dare to compare them to human babies, only less defenseless.

The feelings you have towards pets are similar to those towards human babies, It's something you want to take care of and that really gives you nothing in return other than affection.

The dog sees you as an individual of higher "rank" that they feel they have to serve, be loyal to and make happy so they can recieve love and approval in return.

Cats aren't social animals near the extent of dogs. But since you pet, take care of and feed the cat, often since early childhood (kittenhood, whatever), it sees you sort of as a mother and it's fellings towards you are much like those it had towards it's mother as a kitten.

Are you implying that cats are, for some reason, toward the human end of that spectrum? For god's sake, why?

While they are kinda smart for animals, they have no genetic similarity, and its really kinda stupid to gauge this "humanness" spectrum off of intelligence anyway (Ever eat pork/ham? Pigs are quite a bit smarter than cats).

The best thing to base your humanness gradient off of, then, is the level of affection a human shows for a non-human. This, of course, means the gradient is completely different for different people, and for many people, machines may be on it. Cats aren't very high on my gradient.

I can understand having a pet cat, depending on the cat. I've seen cats that hide from everything 24/7, so the only why their owners know their alive is the food supply goes down. I've also seen cats that just strut around and do nothing. I've also seen extremely nice, playful cats.

I've also seen cat owners suffer relentlessly as they are allergic to them. This I don't understand for any reason. I, for one, could never own one, cats are the only thing I'm allergic to. Though I know people that just suffer over it. Hell, I know people with asthmatic children that keep cats, and that's pretty damn bad. No thank you.

Yeah, I can understand feeling bad for a lost bed. Go ahead, feel depressed, but please understand if I call you a silly wimp if you are depressed for more than a couple hours. Not that I'm implying that the OP did, I just like to vent.

No, seriously. All that for one cat. This is hilarious. New sig to celebrate.

P.S.: over a hundred cats die every day. That's for one (1) fucking city.
And it's not the one I live in.

they have no genetic similarity
Not true. Murphy WJ et al (2000) writes:
The cat-human RH map comparisons provide a new genomic tool for comparative gene mapping in the cat and related Felidae, and provide confirmation that the cat genome organization is remarkably conserved compared with human.
Nonetheless, the Nadeau-Taylor approximation for the estimated number of linkage disruptions since divergence from a common ancestor with human are 79 for the cat, >100 for the goat (Schibler et al. 1997), 132 for the rat (Watanabe et al. 1999), and 180 for the mouse (Nadeau and Taylor 1984; Nadeau and Sankoff, 1998).
The less the linkage disruptions are, the more similar to us they are. Below is a pretty picture of chromosome painting showing all the syntenic alignments between Cat and Human genomes. Click for a larger view. You would be surprised how similar all mammals actually are in terms of genome, so what creaothceann is saying was basically correct.
