Pokémon Red vs. Pokémon Blue

I have this incredible urge to play some Pokémon games and have decided that I'm going to start with either Red or Blue version.

Which is the better of the two? I know that each has the same Pokémon for the most part, so, which one should I start with?

well the story and items are also same in each version

Blue version, it's better to get a butterfly pokemon than a bee pokemon. There are not some pokemons that are exclusive to one version, but they have different encounter rates, in the first forest in blue version, you get to fight lots of caterpillars and very few weedles, while it's the other way around in red.

I always wanted to play whichever was least popular. More people liked the colour red so I bought blue. More people liked colour gold so I bought silver. When diamond and pearl come out I'm getting pearl. So Yeah, blue.

Hahaha, I bought blue and found silver on a sidewalk. Those are the only pokemon games I have.

I bought red cuz everybody I knew had blue , and blue was sold out anyway...

I ended up owning red , blue , yellow , gold , silver , crystal , ruby , and sapphire , and played a few later ones but never owned

I didnt enjoy any as much as blue/red tho , gold/silver was close , but after that was kinda.. meh

But which Pokémon should I choose? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of the starters?

You get a choice between fire, grass, and water(Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle)

Pick one, its not like you are stuck with a single pokeman - but you cannot get the other two without trading with another copy of pokeman red/blue in a given game ie Pick squirtle and you need to trade for Charmander and Bulbasaur and their respective evolutions.

Keep in mind that if you trade, they become rebel from a certain level until you get certain badges.

The first Gym Leader is a Rock type trainer, if you choose Water or Grass, you will have an easier time.

however, you'll need to level bulbasaur up to 13 so you can get the vine whip. You'll get leech seed at 7 or 8 (which does no good anyway)

Should have started Yellow or Fire Red/Leaf Green as they are superior to Red and Blue in everything aside from Nostalgia.

For the starters:

Bulbasaur = Easy Mode.
Squirtle = Normal Mode.
Charmander = Hard Mode.

Bulbasaur is super effective against Brock, Misty and Giovanni and weak to Erika, Koga and Blaine, making it easier right at the start of the game. By the time you get to Erika, you can catch more Pokes by that point.

Squirtle is super effective against Brock, Blaine and Giovanni and weak to Erika and Surge. Squirtle also learns most of the HMs.

Charmander is weak to Brock, Misty, and Giovanni, so at the very start you are at a disadvantage with not much selection of Pokes. He is strong against Erika and Koga later on. Fire types such as Charmander are weak to water, the most populous type in all the Pokemon games. Picking Charmander is more useful much later in the game against the Elite 4 than the others.

Just like Clements says Pokemon Red is useless as the remake of it Fire Red is superior. there is also the remake of the green version called Green Leaf. To bad that there is nor a remake of the blue version.

Also keep in mind that (iirc) Brock doesn't have rock or ground type moves learned for his Pokemon, so the worst you'll keep getting with charmander is not very effective when you use ember on geodude and onix.

ALSO: In Pokemon Firered and Leafgreen, Bulbasaur learns vine whip at level 10.

Brock's Onix in Fire Red/Leaf Green knew Rock Tomb. In the original GB games (RGBY), his Pokemon did not have Rock/Ground moves.

If you pick Charmander in the originals (RGBY), both Scratch and Ember are not effective, as Brock's Pokemon are part Rock. You have no attacks that do normal or super effective damage in the originals, although in FR/LG you get Metal Claw @ LV13.

when I 1st started pokemon I chose charmander , but I suggest never skipping a battle , it helps a lot later on in the game

for me , brock was the only rough spot when I had charmander , there were plenty of battles up to misty that helped me to level up and beat her

Also, don't forget about catching Mew... I'm quite sure you have to do it in the town where you fight Misty. There is a guide for it on GameFAQs here (scroll to the guide called "Mew Glitch FAQ").

Get the blue version, between the trade offs, you get some of the strongest of a given type more often in blue.
Strong ground and eletric in blue - Sandslash, Raichu.

Biggest pro to red is being able to get Arcanine your best fire option.

Most of the other really good Pokemon are native to both versions.

While it is true that the mix, frequency, and distribution were different for each version, it is also true that some were exclusive to particular versions of the games. This was part of the whole formula. In the games where particular species could not be encountered or captured in the wild, you could only obtain those ones by trading with other players.
