Game Speed & Video Modes...

Post by pryial »

Okay I'm new to this whole emulation thing, I've used ZSNES wayyy back in the day on my old win98se machine, and everything worked flawlessly. I have even used it on this machine, which isn't much (these days) but still gets the job done just fine for newer games.

My questions are as follows:
1.) Game speed. If I have auto-framerate enabled, it seems to play perfectly as if I were playing it on an SNES. This is good, yes. However for the games that I usually play it just seems way too slow for my desires. BUT if I increase the frame rate (to zero?) it disables auto-frame rate, and the game plays about twice as fast as I'd like it to. I just want it to be slightly faster than normal. It worked perfectly fine a long time ago, and on my previous computer.. it was PERFECT... not too fast, and just slightly faster than real-time. Q: Is there a way to make this possible? I notice that in the new v1.5 there are more options for emulation speed and frame-rate adjustments. I also notice that the slider on the bar adjusts emulation speed in increments of 1x. Is there a way that perhaps 1.2x or 1.5x increments could be opted in for future versions? It seems that 2x is just way too fast, and 1x is just... well way to slow, lol. There is no perfect in between.

2.)Video Options. I absolutely love how everything is adjustable, and the graphics modes are just plain awesome (KUDOS!).. I've tried them all out to see what makes what in terms of game play differences, and there is quite a mix of different options in there. Its awesome and pleasing to the eyes. However, I noticed that some options made no difference. Such as Hi-Res Mode 7. I have tried this option on a variety of games, and I have seen no difference... is it specific only to a few games, or is there something here that I am missing? It seems to make no difference on anything I've tested it out on.

I have taken a quick look-see through the threads already existing and didn't really find the perfect answer, hence my posting here.

Another quick question.. net-play. How exactly does this work? I would assume that two people would have to have identical ROM's and identical versions. Is this stable? I've never tried it with anybody, but I assume its a fun way to play 2P games?

Thanks to everybody that has put this emulator together, its great! I can think of only one thing that would make a great improvement to the already great GUI... higher resolutions for the GUI would be nice... the huge blocky setup that it has right now is okay, but if it was a BIT smaller it'd be better, in my opinion. I have a 19" monitor, and running it full screen is like WHOA welcome to DUKE NUKEM 3D for DOS! Hehehe.

Thanks a mil!

Hi Res mode 7 doubles the vertical resolution of for graphics that use Mode 7. World map in Final Fantasy games, the track in F-Zero, etc. use Mode 7.

The most stable netplay is probably in ZSNES 1.36 or 1.42n. Netplay has been completely removed from 1.50. Yes, you will need the same emulator version as well as identical ROMs.

The GUI will probably not see any kind of resolution change in the near future because the GUI was originally written for DOS and the GUI is more or less identical across all ports. Unless the DOS port is dropped and GUI code in completely ported to C and rewritten, the GUI stays as it is.

Cool, thanks for the information.

I just stopped using 1.5 last night and went back to 1.42.. and it's working just fine now. I had to delete the .cfg file and re-do it, but its no longer choppy (it became choppy after I messed with settings and couldn't get them to work right again with 1.50... )

Oh well I'll figure it out one day.

You could just delete the config file to reset all settings.

What? What settings were you tweaking? You're supposed to have deleted the 1.42 cfg files before using 1.50 anyways.

I did, in fact I deleted everything. Including 1.42 and 1.50.

Its just really weird.. nobody has any idea about how to play it at like .5x faster, eh??

Possible in a distant future version??

You could increase the execution speed in the cfg file. However, there is no guarentee that the emulation will be accurate and there is a chance that games will break.

My exact problem too.
Increasing the framerate just a notch makes the game go at super duper unplayable speeds.

Thanks to my old power(less) computer I was able to play games on faster speeds while still keeping in control.

But on my new computer I can't play at any speed other than normal because games are unplayable due to the high speeds.

leave frame rate on auto and maybe adjust emulation speed instead?
